Hi, author! I can't believe it's that time of the year again! I'm very happy to be doing Yuletide again and I hope you will be too.

It's important to me that you have fun, so if there's anything in my sign-up that you find obnoxious or whatever please feel free to toss it out the window and go with what you need. Read as much as you need & want to and no more :) I will be very happy with anything in my requested pairings/characters, so if the muse takes you in a different direction from my prompts and letter, please do just go with it.

QUICK NOTE: There will be Critical Role spoilers through episode 70 in this letter, and I typically watch the episodes within 24 hours of them airing, so you don't have to worry about spoiling me. Don't worry if you get jossed halfway through your story, though, I'll totally understand. I have moved Critical Role to the last part of the letter just in case you've matched me for something else and are trying to avoid spoilers!

General Likes
- For the purposes of Yuletide, hopeful (or outright happy) endings are my jam. I would prefer for all of my requested characters to still be alive at the end of the story. I don't mind if the story goes in a darker or angstier direction before that, though (in fact I quite like it).
- I love many of the classic slash tropes, especially fake dating, wake up married, kidfic, emotional misunderstandings, pining. Wacky dilemma tropes like bodyswap, sudden mind reading, cursed to tell the truth, etc are also really fun for me.
- breakup-makeup/getting back together stories are the greatest trope of all time. I love the agony of the break-up and then the cautious learning to trust again.
- I like a range of different tones, many different styles of AU, etc. I like reading stuff close to the tone of whichever canon and I like reading stuff that takes those characters and puts them in stories of different tones - darker, lighter, different contexts, pornier
- I love canon-divergence AUs where one thing happened differently and then ...
- Watch this space, I will probably do a Yuleporn comment this year. However, short form, if the porn muse takes you, go with it with my blessing. My significant squicks are bloodplay and scat, and although I love noncon I think probably not for the fandoms I'm requesting this year.

General Dislikes
- I don't enjoy rape recovery as a plotpoint
- Deathfic, sickfic, and H/C are also things I would prefer not to receive.

Although as usual for Yuletide I had periods where I felt like everything was awful, I would never come up with anything interesting or pleasing to read, could never capture a fraction of the tone of the wonderful canon, etc, this on the whole went pretty smoothly - perhaps because I've done a bit more writing this year than I usually do between Yuletides, or perhaps because I had a lovely prompt by the very sweet Oshun, or - and this is probably it - perhaps because I had regular write-ins with K and V and it forced me to do heaps. Anyway, it was really great fun and I had a fantastic Yuletide experience.

I was privileged to beta a couple of things although I do regret not getting in my usual beta-for-a-random-stranger this year! However, I beta-read:

Rangers Knead the Way by [archiveofourown.org profile] aworldinside. I don't know the canon but it was supremely fun to do a baking beta :D And even without canon knowledge and feels, I can tell that it's rilly cute and if you do know Justified I commend it to you.

A Trip to Sydney by [archiveofourown.org profile] sixthlight. I *do* know this canon and I love this fic, which is casefic about Mac on the grounds that gdi, Mac deserves some loving attention. I really liked Mac's voice in this and, of course, casefic is the dream.

I had a great Yuletide this year, on the whole :) I have a few recs tucked away in private bookmarks and I might post those this weekend if I can manage.

Happy New Year! You can check out my annual stuff I read last year post if you want.

In other news, Yuletide is upon us once again! I had a really really fabulous time doing Yuletide this year actually, including a couple of desperation writing parties with the Yulecops of Twitter that were both delightful social occasions and also really good at cudgeling me into action. I ended up being really proud of the thing that I wrote, not that it's necessarily all that great shakes but it was something new for me - new fandom, new pairing I'd never really thought about before, and new sensation of ... feeling like I could really see the development in my writing from my older Yuletide fic?

This is very spoilery for Republic of Thieves and I don't want to cut this so I'm not going to say much more but a great follow-up to that book if you needed a breather after it. Completely different in tone to the other fic and yet, like the other fic, also totally like canon! This is a fun little caper fic, not at all spoilery, set during the gang's childhood/teenage years in Camorr. It's vicious, violent and fun in just the way canon can be - I particularly loved the flagellating apparatus, which fits SO seamlessly into Camorr.

For other recs, I'm still barely anywhere with my reading (I have about fifty open tabs in a special Yuletide window) but my recs I'm bookmarking on the AO3 here. I particularly commend the Rivers of London fic, which is excellent, and the Merlin Conspiracy fic, which had one thing I really disliked but was a very interesting and thoughtful fic that you definitely need to know canon for but is very rewarding if you do. I'm really impressed by people's ability to add to that canon which I think is awfully tricky.

Finally, I saw Desolation of Smaug the other day. spoilers: some positive, some negative, a fairly incoherent set of commentary bashed out the day afgter I went )

In this story Carmela gets thrown into alien prison for chocolate smuggling and Dairine has to come and rescue her, so obviously I ADORE it. Relationships: Nita Callahan/Kit Rodriguez
Characters: Nita Callahan, Kit Rodriguez, Carmela Rodriguez
Summary:

"Let's go into the city," said Nita.

This is about Nita and Kit on an everyday errantry, and while I had a lovely prompt from a very nice recipient I still struggled mightily with it. On the whole I'm pleased with it - it's very long by my standards, the second-longest piece of fic I've ever written, and technically competent - but, I don't know. I don't think it adds anything new or contributes in any meaningful way to the Nita/Kit body of work, basically, and I'm starting to realise that in Young Wizards I really need to feel like I'm adding something or I can't get into it. I think the problem may have been that I didn't do a canon review this year and was just like, oh I know this fandom back to front, which of course just trapped me into writing something I thought was repetitive. So next year I think I'll try to take a few more risks. (Someone remind me of this?)

I did have a wonderful suite of betas who dropped everything at the eleventh hour to help me out. [personal profile] sushiflop, as usual, was very good to me for the entire month. [personal profile] archiesfrog read it in person and was extremely kind and encouraging, as was [personal profile] aworldinside. [livejournal.com profile] arysteia gave me a tremendous unfamiliar-with-the-canon beta which kicked me in a few places I needed to be kicked (but I ignored her about the ellipses because I'm a rebel, sorry V). And both [livejournal.com profile] chattycheese and [personal profile] shihadchick gave really thoughtful canon betas.

I beta'd some things as well! The beta process, which happens when my fic is usually posted, is often my favourite part of Yuletide because I enjoy the collaborative group-huggy feeling of it all.

A Week in the Life (3282 words) by archiesfrog - this is Kel fic! With Neal and Tobe!

Trust and Timing (2449 words) by aworldinside - This is fic for a rather cute and silly movie about young women who run relay at the thinly-disguised Olympics. I watched it in order to do this beta and I'm extremely glad I did because it's delightful! The fic itself is, of course, ALSO delightful, being the pairing I really craved in the film the whole time - funny and hot.

I have a funny feeling I've forgotten something but I can't remember what at this stage, remind me if it was you!

I did have a great Yuletide this year, much improved on last year's general emotional malaise. Thanks for making it fun with me, gang!

Way-too-late obligatory Yuletide post.

I had kind of a weird Yuletide this year where I just felt ... out of it the whole time. I read hardly any fic and, although on the whole I was not unhappy with what I wrote, I didn't really *feel* it. This led to me doing dreadful things like not leaving a comment on my gift fic til the day before reveals, about which I feel guilty even now. So, anyway, I don't have any particular recs because I just read hardly anything.

I received: Velveteen Wizards by [archiveofourown.org profile] oniongirl, a YW/DCU crossover that's the sequel to Wizards in Winter, my gift last year. These are really darling portal crossover fics and considering the pool of DC + YW fans is really pretty small, are such thoughtful gifts.

I wrote: and remember who I am, a Tris-at-Lightsbridge story for the lovely [personal profile] staranise. I got an excellent beta from [personal profile] morbane and some tremendous handholding from [personal profile] sushiflop, Queen of the Yuletide Cheerleaders, [personal profile] archiesfrog and [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light.

This was quite fun to write but, warning for those who care about this kind of thing, has a horrendously huge amount of OCs. The excellent prompt, which I used as a summary, was "Can she fit in, and does she really want to?" and asked for insecure!Tris. I didn't quite capture Tris' insecurity in the way I wanted to but I really enjoyed the opportunity to look at Tris in a different light - although Tris' insecurity is quite important it's not an aspect of her character I think about very often, and so that was actually really great.

I have written one scene of my Yuletide fic. It is over a thousand words.

Pros:
- Hey, it's over the word limit already!

Cons:
- So much fucking exposition, jesus.
- ONE SCENE and it's OVER A THOUSAND WORDS I do NOT HAVE TIME to write something epic this year, ffff.
- If this is going to not be revoltingly boring, I'm going to need a plot. FML.

1. New rule: if it takes me longer than a tweet to type out, I'm posting about it.
1a. except for politics because if I have to think about the election for longer than 30 seconds at a time I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. I look at my posts for the last two elections and just feel guilty at how much more I knew and how much more I cared and was involved but I just can't this year, I just can't.
1b. Sometimes that posting might take place at tumblr.
1c. This is mostly because if I don't get back in the habit of stringing words in sentences on a regular basis Yuletide is going to go very, very badly for me.

2. This might mean that my levels of boringly mundane posts SKYROCKET, so this is just advance defriend-at-will warning!
2a. But this post probably jinxed it, so never mind.

3. Tonight I:
- Washed dishes
- Cooked dinner
- Washed dishes
- Made cake
- Washed dishes
- Took DISGUSTING rubbish out, in the dark and rain down my steep hill (*polishes halo*)
- Knit a 310 st row of lace, fucked it up right at the beginning, began the slow awful process of tinking back
- Watched a lot of Sports Night. I'm at the beginning of season 2 and I expect to get the whole lot done by the end of the weekend.

4. Yuletide! Who wants to talk about Yuletide?

- Yuletide looks MASSIVELY complicated this year, holy crap. I have every confidence that it will actually be fine and straightforward but oh my.
- On the other hand perhaps this will take care of the massive overloading of the servers, ha ha ha.
- Noms! What are we nomming? I'm doing Cats of Grand Central for [personal profile] trialia and I'll probably end up adding some characters to the Young Wizards fandom (am I correct in my reading that adding characters requires a separate nomination?), but I'm thinking someone is probably going to beat me to nomming the Newsflesh trilogy, so ... I'm not sure what my third will be. Maybe it will be book-related? I don't know. I kind of want some slashy, slashy slash, like with classic 90s slash tropes where one of them is gay, and one of them ~always thought he was straight, IDK, I am just having this massive nostalgia that I'm pretty sure is related to how damn 90s Sports Night is. Bill Clinton is still the President, y'all, and Dana's hair! (Which I love. Unfortunately I think I've got to embrace the fact that 90s hair will always be awesome and a style icon for my hair. Oh well, haters know where to go.) (<-- that way.)

Oh man, I so badly wanted to get these up before reveals, but JUST TO PROVE that I did write all of this stuff before New Year, here are my prelim recs!
three YW, two TDiR, and some misc. )

I wrote two stories but they weren't very good (not being modest, I really am not pleased with either of them): Some Blessing in Disguise Nikita, Nikita/Daniel, for [personal profile] templemarker, which was not very good despite some stupendous beta efforts from just about everyone I know as well as two delightful Yulechat strangers, Hsifeng and someone whose Yuletide name I don't know (went straight to email and it was not obviously fannish name); and too young to know the time, Circle of Magic, Sandry/Daja, Lark/Rosethorn, for [personal profile] trialia, beta'd by Grevling. Darlingest Tria, I hope you had a good Christmas anyway.

On the other hand, I beta'd some awesome stories! I think this is vaguely in the order in which I read them.

What You See is What You Get (If You're Looking Hard Enough, [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light, The Mentalist, Steampunk AU. So like, I know nothing about this TV show, but I know that this story is fabulous. If you know the Mentalist, you probably will think so as well.

I've Got Four Voices On The Line (the only one I hear is mine, by [personal profile] sushiflop, Animorphs, Tobias-centric. This is as awesome a Tobias fic as anyone could want to read.

The Indian Rope Trick by [personal profile] dustyasymptotes, The Children's Book, Julian Cain. OKAY SO I can't really say I beta'd this because I am the worst person in the world and *forgot it was sitting in my inbox* and then I'm pretty sure she went away. So I'M TERRIBLE. But this story? Not terrible! Julian Cain, at the end of his life.

I know there are a few last-minute yulechat betas I did that I'm forgetting about BUT. I'm also going to sneak in a TOTALLY NON-YULETIDE RELATED rec for...

The Anonymous Tip Job and Professional Contacts by [personal profile] china_shop, White Collar/Leverage, Neal, Hardison, and then the sequel is Neal/Hardison. LOOK AT THAT PAIRING. That is one hell of a pairing, people, is what I'm saying. These were a treat to beta, and they are just exactly right.

ALSO AND FINALLY. a) I did a blog post about the books I read last year; and b) I made the DW post where I've been reading/reviewing/listing these books public, so if you're interested in my (mostly seriously mundane) commentary on more of them, have a look.

YOU GUYS

I GOT THE MOST AMAZING YULETIDE FICS.

I WILL TALK ABOUT THEM IN THE ORDER THEY SHOW UP ON MY GIFTS PAGE. Which, it turns out, is posting order: cool.

Also, I got *four* yuletide fics this year, which is just plain embarrassing! I am going to have to work hard next year to increase my yuletide karma. I've only ever got one before and I kinda didn't know what to do with myself. I feel *so* spoiled.

In Absentia (Nikita: Nikita/Alex, Alex/Jaden)
PORN SNIPPETS: THE BEST THING EVER. This is hot and yet also illuminating of all their characters. Alex and Jaden have a wonderful competitive vibe in this which I love, and Nikita and Alex are so sweet to each other.

Wizards in Winter (Young WizardsxDCU)
GIANT SIZED CROSSOVER. Seriously, this story is SO INDULGENT. Nita and Kit get accidentally sucked into Gotham (back when Tim was still Robin the first time around). They have adventures with Renee Montoya, Tim Drake, Cass Cain and Babs Gordon. In other words, everything is amazing!

Roleplay (Nikita: Jaden character study, Alex/Jaden)
OH MAN, so this is basically five things that never happened to Jaden, and it is GENIUS. Each of the five things are like perfectly formed gems that instantly satisfy you while realllly making me want to know WAY MORE and get FIC SET IN THOSE UNIVERSES. Also: there is hot damn porn in a pairing I ADORE. Jaden has a wonderful couple of relationships with Alex that are really well-thought-out and, like the best AUs, each of these different Jadens are clearly rooted in canonical Jaden. I love it.

On the Burning Deck (Swallows & Amazons: Nancy in the Blitz, John/Nancy)
THIS IS SO GOOD. I don't want to spoil plot details for you, but it's really perfect, the writer has a WONDERFUL grip on Nancy and works her well. It's just a lovely fic.

YOU GUYS, I AM SO SPOILED, I HOPE YOUR YULETIDE IS JUST AS GREAT.

1. I haven't said anything of substance for months and months, although the word document in which I hang my "list of things to write about" has had the following topics entered and erased as they became irrelevant:
- Spirit Day/Purple Day
- The last episode I watched of any show other than So You Think You Can Dance, which is all my brain can handle at the moment, I don't want to talk about it
- [personal profile] bossymarmalade's post about Yoko Ono, which made me cry but I didn't delicious it and if I go and look for it right now THIS POST WILL NEVER GET POSTED JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHERS I STARTED BUT DIDN'T FINISH
- the folk festival (cliff notes: awesome)
- The Hobbit
- Feminism Today
- Stephen Fry

It's also had the following things erased because thinking about them enough to write about them makes me want to scream:
- My last few assignments (cliff notes: this year has been amazing/horrible, I pulled my third all-nighter of the year [only my fourth or fifth in my lifetime] on Sunday, I have been passing but not doing so great)
- How hard it's been to get out of bed lately
- trying to find a job
- trying to find a job
- trying to find a job
- the fact that today I re-wrote my CV to be appropriate for retail and customer service work again
- the fact that I'm considering re-writing it to be appropriate for admin work; what's the difference between admin and reception and can anyone explain to me what quals I need for admin work?
- a whole lot of inappropriate personal detail which I put down, got disgusted with myself, and deleted. But if anyone spontaneously thinks up something they like about me anytime, I could really use the support right now. I just tried to type :D at a friend and I typo'd it as D: three times before I got it right: that's the state of the me right now. Freudian fricking emoticon typos.

2. I'm doing [livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu this month. My plan was to try to finish one of my multiple YW WiPs (I have one Dairine/Carmela Epic of Poor Characterisation and Not Great Plot, one Kit/Ronan Epic of Road Trips and Slashiness, and about a squillion bits and bobs that I've started & not finished) but I really really am not feeling either of them. Does anyone want to prompt me? I basically just want to get in shape before Yuletide sign-ups since I haven't written a word all year. Go crazy and prompt me for any fandom you know I'm in, but fair warning, I really suck at writing about men (I'm trying but it's not going well), so if you give me a non-YW slash prompt it'll be either unfilled or just really *crap*. (Also I only really write in YW so you know. No promises I just want some motivation, I guess.) (I am skimming the Bechdel unfilled prompts too.)

3. Speaking of Yuletide though, who's doing it? Who wants to set up a small gang of whiners-about-Yuletide, maybe just through getting all our emails together and sending out massive whines or emails or squees or whatevs? I know [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light's doing it this year (YAY) and I assume [personal profile] sushiflop, right? I feel like there are more people. Roll up in the comments and let's talk! *chinhands*

3. Does anyone know if DW does the LJ thing where if you let a paid account expire but pick it back up again soonish, your icons come back?

4. I'm really really hungry. I think I'm going to try and find some food, come back and do some writing. How are you today?
labellementeuse: Kate Kane (Batwoman) taking off her mask (comics kate demasking)
Yuletide! Nominations are open! I'm so (so!) happy! But guys, I need you to help me, can anyone remember a rare fandom I ship slash in? Because my noms (not sign-ups, but still) so far are:
- Young Wizards (will ask, Dairine/Carmela; will probably ask again, gen; I usually do at least one "any" request for this fandom and then give a het, slash, femslash and gen idea to suit everyone)
- Gilmore Girls (will maybe ask, Rory/Paris)
- Nikita (will maybe ask, Alex/Jaden or Nikita/Alex)
- Circle of Magic (will probs ask, Briar/Tris)
- Batwoman (DCU) (might maybe ask; Kate Kane, Renee Montoya, gen or fslash although I always feel guilty for liking Kate/Renee, like what, the only two lesbians in Gotham must be together? This looked esp. bad in that one scene where Maggie Sawyer and Kate Kane are both in tuxes at a party and nearly hook up. I'm sure Anissa Pierce will be in the upcoming series, ha ha.)

So you see. It's a problem. I have a whole lot of fslash up in there but only one het pairing and NO SLASH PAIRINGS, what has the world come to? I know it sounds ridiculous to stress about this, but I'm aware that some people will only write in one genre and I want to make it nice and easy for eeeeveryone because that's how I roll. Only I can't think of a slash pairing I'm into right now that's obscure (right now I'm reading: Wincest, Dean/Castiel, Sassy, Sherlock/John, and I had a brief kick for Harry/Draco on the weekend. See, I do read slash, honest! This is all very distressing for me atm because I have so long identified as a slasher. I don't want to be a femslasher or a het shipper, people, the writing is so different! Also, there's so little femslash written that it just makes me want to cry.) I have one nom left, someone tell me how to vote?!

Also of interest: pursuant to a discussion at [profile] get__together about threesomes and moresomes assuming the role slash played in fandom twenty years ago, as the ~edgy-but-not-really, lower-volume, and less-obvious-to-outsiders fandom flavour. I would sort of like it if fslash did this as well, but: is the whole maximum-two-characters thing going to harsh people's mellow, or will just get way bigger this year? (IT SHOULD GET WAY BIGGER THIS YEAR, PEOPLE. I would really like to see: Dean/Lisa/Castiel, Sam/Dean/Castiel, Parker/Hardison/Eliot, Neal/Peter/Elizabeth although there's a fair bit of that in fandom, it doesn't really need the boost, the usual DCU m/m/m suspects and also Tim/Cass/Steph, Harry/Ron/Hermione, etc. EVERYONE GO SIGN UP; I barely feel confident writing het, let along threesomes, but I read that shit like it's going out of fashion.) Remember is due *after* Christmas so it won't overlap with Yuletide! What else do you want to do on Boxing Day other than write threesome porn, huh, huh?

Yuletide reveal!

But first, a reminder! My story was Cave Canem, by [livejournal.com profile] icefalcon, and I want to give a special shout-out because I have never, as far as I know, even bumped into her in fandom and she wrote something so carefully catered to my likes and dislikes that it's almost embarassing. It's a truly heroic effort and, you know, props and thanks to her. :)

I wrote two stories this year: my main story, and a treat for [livejournal.com profile] senri because I think she's aces and liked the prompt in question.

My main fic was To Each His Thunder, Rain or Wind, a 9,500-word Young Wizards Regency AU.
Which is really all that I can say about that. This fic is eight times longer than any other piece of fanfiction I have written. It is shorter than anything else I have written, including papers, except for my research essay from this year. I know that it's not much to many people, but it is absolutely EPIC for me, I am SO proud of it, and I absolutely had a BLAST writing it. I do wish I'd had time to flesh out the ending, but I'm still pretty thrilled with it, and ecstatic I get to show it to everyone now. :D

Also, I have to give a shout-out to the village who helped me raise this in my blinding uncertainty: Ilyena, Lucy, and Sarah for awesome first-pass beta-ing and audiencing; #yulechat's Nextian, Spoke, and Sleepfighter who generously agreed to read a stranger's 10k fic and reassure them that it made sense; and Meg and Senri, who wrote all the best lines and without whom I would never have finished.

My treat was Synnecrosis, an Animorphs story featuring Cassie in one of the various dystopic AUs that the Animorphs visited. This is a pretty weird story about the relationship between Cassie and the Yeerk in her head, who we see working together in this dystopic future. I found it disturbing but kind of fun to write!

I also had a terrific beta for this, Captain Oblivious, whose LJ name I'm not sure of but someone point them out to me!

The stuff I beta'd! I don't like to rec stuff I beta'd before the reveal, but I very much enjoyed all of these, so there you go. In the order in which I beta'd them, approximately:

In Most Directions, Water by [livejournal.com profile] senri. Young Wizards, N/K flavoured gen.
This is a terrific story about dreams and sexual tension. Erm, it's hard to summarise? But I loved reading it. :)

The Tale of Prince Gawald of Valdemar and Princess Avasolarwe of Rethwellan, by [personal profile] hazel/[livejournal.com profile] maudlinrose, Valdemar.
This is a really awesome fic in a fandom I have never read in my life. I found it utterly charming and it makes me want to go and read the Valdemar book/s, which no-one has ever achieve for me and Lackey before, so there you go!

Just the Way it Works by Ryuutchi. Gentlemen Bastards, Locke/Jean, sorta, NC-17.
This is young!Jean and Locke hilarity and sexual experimentation, IMO with a really classic slash vibe. I liked it a lot!

Can't Offer You a Wedding by Kastaka. Dragonriders of Pern, OFC/OMC, G.
This is a look into the way Weyrs influence the lives of ordinary people, as well as the movers and shakers of Pern. Really interesting exploration of Pern society.

The Social Contract (Boys and Tigers remix) by [livejournal.com profile] senri again! Calvin & Hobbes, gen.
This is a super, super sweet treat, one of the few C&H fics set during canon (as opposed to being a Calvin-Grows-Up story) and it has a really terrific snarky Hobbes, as well as some terrific images.

Nuns fret not at their convent's narrow walls, by Ambyr. Tortall, an Alanna/George what if Alanna never became a knight AU.
This is great and tremendously intriguing, and I'm really hoping Ambyr will write more of Alanna and George's future adventures Saving Tortall.
