Mar. 20th, 2005 08:49 pmThe book list, because what better to do with your life?
Bold the ones you've read.
Italicise the ones you started but never finished.
Underline the ones you own but haven't gotten around to reading yet.
Add three of your own!
( This thing has gotten SO BIG. )
In a similar, bibliophile vein, I was just reading something by Nancy Garden- Good Moon Rising- and I was reminded of the fact that I can simply never pin down that it's she who is writing. I'm not sure why, I've read two other books by her- The Year They Burned the Books and, surprise surprise, Annie on my Mind< and when I look back I can sort of go "Oh, lesbians in high school- check; positive themes, check; strong adult rolemodel, check;" But there's never anything about the writing that says "Oh, yeah, you know who wrote this, it was Nancy Garden." Now, don't get me wrong. Although I DON'T think Annie... is the greatest, or most influential, gay fiction LIEK, EVAH (which too many people seem to do, since you ask... I mean it is a very, very good book, but how do you make a judgement like that? I KNOW it's not the most influential gay fiction in New Zealand; it's not even the most influential Young Adult Lesbian book in New Zealand, because that crown goes to, dum da da dum, Dare Truth or Promise- almost as predictable, I confess, but I know a helluva lot of girls of all orientations who've read that and none who've read Annie) anyway, as I was saying, I still do very much like her books. It's just... thye are so very much without landmarks. Each of the three books have been set different places, different times- the time thing is crucial, I think- and despite a certain homoeneity of theme I just can't get a grip on her. I always wonder why.
Okay, shutting up now. :)
