Going by your profile you're in the US - I understand yarn is a lot cheaper there. Sure if you have hoarded worsted weight (which in itself is a rare concept here) or have sweaters good enough to unravel (because the cheaper ones tend to just cut from knitted fabric, rather than knitted in the shape of the garment which can be frogged) it may well be cheaper) but this may be a non-US centric experience, not a classist dismissal based on the assumption that all yarn is hand dyed merino.
