dear lovely yuletider,

I am so excited to be playing in the yuletide sandbox with you! I will begin this letter by saying that, if you like, that is ALL you need to read. I trust you and I want you to write something you WANT to write. You should absolutely feel free to stick to the letter of the yuletide rules and only write from my fandom/character requests. I am an adventurous soul in my fanfiction tastes, especially in my baby fandoms, and all the guidelines I am going to give in this letter are ones for which I have read fics that broke every one, and nevertheless blew me away. So don't worry or stress. That is not what Yuletide is about.

That being said! I know that I, as a yuletider, like more detail! So if you are like me, read on! If you are not like me, stop reading now.

Things I like: I really prefer happy endings. Women. Het, slash, and gen. Porn. G-rated friendship or romance. Kidfic. Breakup-makeup! Characters of colour. The appearance of cooking or handcrafts in fic. Women being professional and competent.

Things I'm not so big on: Major character or requested character deathfic; racism (feel free to kick the shit out of SGU's skanky race issues); ableism; sexism; stories featuring rape as a major plot point.

Onto some fandom specifics!

Diane Duane - Young Wizards - Any

Request:
This is the fandom of my heart, and I like anything in it. Whatever you want to write in it, I'm happy! However, I know that I personally hate to write without a guideline, so here's a general prompt: "There's a drumming noise inside my head/it starts when you're around."

I like slash, het, and gen in this fandom, as highly-rated or as low-rated as you like. I like Nita/Kit and Tom/Carl in the conventional pairing states. In the unconventional pairing stakes, I simply ADORE Nita/Joanne. I would love to see futurefic for any of these pairings, especially Nita/Joanne college!fic. When writing about adults, I love seeing the adults interacting with each other - i.e. Harry talking to Tom and Carl, Juan and Marina talking to Annie (I have no idea how that would work, but hey...)

Random alternative: if you're familiar with the short story in the YW universe, "Theobroma", I'd adore to see any of the wizard characters from those stories reappear.

Oh god, you probably hate me for this request! I wanted it to be relaxed enough that if you offered this fandom for only one or two characters you wouldn't be upset to get an "any" request, but specific enough that you wouldn't feel like you were floundering. I'm not sure I achieved either of these things, but please write whatever you like to read in this fandom, I know I'll enjoy it. (If you're new to the fandom and you hate one or my other requests: if you track down "Theobroma", which is a short story in the anthology "Wizards, Inc.", that might be an easy alternative.

Diana Wynne Jones - Moving Castle series - Charmain Baker

Request:
I would adore some fic with Charmain learning to be a wizard and/or becoming the Wizard Norland. Sophie appearing would be brill but is not required.

See, now that's much better, isn't it? I love House of Many Ways a lot and can't wait to see what you do with Charmain.

Tamora Pierce - Circle Series - Briar Moss, Trisana Chandler

Request:
Oh, man. All I want for Yuletide is some Briar/Tris! Het would be lovely, but gen that doesn't feature them dating or sleeping with others would be neat too; ideally, it would feature their shared love of books. Please no fatphobic language wrt Tris. I love all the characters in these series, so throw in and take out background characters as you please; I have no 'ship that I'm specially attached to except B/T, so whatever you prefer is fine.

My request once again says it all. I would particularly like fic set during or after The Will of the Empress, but I would also like, say, epistolary fic set during the Circle Opens. If you prefer gen, Number 3 Cheeseman St comedy hour would be terrific! Or missing-scene fic from Will of the Empress - I forget if we ever see the scene where Briar and Tris open up to each other again.

Stargate: Universe - Chloe and Ronald

Request:
Oh, boy! I would LOVE it if you could get these two in bed together, but failing that, friendship fic would rock my little hand-knit socks off. You can totally kill Rush or Young if you like! I guess I am not attached to any of these characters so much that you can't kill them, but I prefer happy endings.

So... some people I know are already laughing at me for requesting this fandom and these characters; I guess it is sort of an odd pairing, but I can see it doing really well, can't you? :P In a sense I'm looking for fix-it fic here: these are the two characters I'm most ambivalent on in terms of their role on the show. I'd love to see something that addresses what I see as the potential skank of Ronald's race: I'm just not comfortable with the way he simultaneously combines Ronan's violence with Teal'c's habit of meditating naked for all-round character of colour fail. Simultaneously, I worry that Chloe is a little too much of a fish-out-of-water. I really want to see her grow and become a force worth dealing with. I think the interaction between these two could really illuminate both these aspects of their characters because they're such an unlikely duo.

Scott/Eli would be A-OK as a background ship, if you ship it.

OK, Yule Goat! Doubtless you're thoroughly sick of me by now. I hope you enjoy writing whatever you end up writing; I hope this letter inspires you without making you feel restricted! I hope you have a lovely yuletide season.

dear flist: yes, I requested SGU. You wanna make something of it, huh, huh? Also, because apparently this is an Issue this year, I am posting my letter now because that way I can include a link in my sign-up, and since I personally spent hours and hours and HOURS last year scrolling through the Yuletide Letter post last year, I want to encourage behaviour that makes me NOT have to do that. Because: UGH.

I wouldn't dream of it. :P

O god! Well, I have this pairing that I'm pretty sure is going to be a rare pairing, and I'm guessing that it will no longer be Yuletide-qualified next year - although, mind you, there really has been no buzz about it, so I could be wrong - and I just wanted to get in with a shot while I could, and maybe also get someone else to influence fandom in the way early fic sometimes is.

Also, yesterday I typed up this enormous comment on Joe Mallozzi's blog which more or less summarised all my problems w/the show AND the reasons I'm going to keep watching, but then Firefox crashed - which on the whole, probably a good thing - but I might recreate it as a DW post next week, we'll see.
