Anybody going to, or thinking about going to, Conspiracy II? Guests of honor Eric Flint, Dylan Horrocks, Isabelle Carmody and, um, some cyberpunk lady I've never heard of. I'm sort of vaguely considering it but, well, I probably wouldn't bother paying air fares and so on if no-one I know's going to be there. :P

As a historian, Eric Flint makes me want to spit tacks. Can't speak for the rest of them.

None of the guests seem *hugely* compelling to me either, but some of the other stuff involved looks like fun and Carmody's work is excellent.

I'm sort of neutral about Flint; I haven't got the historical know-how to comment on his accuracy and I am purely uninterested in what I've read of his work anyway.

Well, he's a strong believer in the uniqueness of the American system and his books essentially speculate on how great it would be if it was introduced to the world 150 years earlier. Hopefully that will keep you away from him. :-)

I don't mind him. Okay, his history is very "Now this is the REAL truth, forget what they told you at high school" even when it's blatantly false, and his "Smalltown America is the best place on Earth, with the best people!*" is so headdesky as to be almost unbearable, but he writes a good plot. And I do like many of his characters. I just try to ignore the blatantly stupid bits.

*Okay, I can go with the CEOs Are Evil bit, but smalltown Americans are conservative rednecks in the vast majority. Which = not good.

I don't really think he does write a very good plot. Its always unclear what his villains are actually trying to achieve, they seem to just quibble around until the Americans smash them up.

:D hee, awesome. It's over a holiday weekend so, y'know...

Eee, excellent. If you like Dari, you'll like HW! She's one of my favourite red-headed computer dorks in all of fandom, right up there with Willow and Babs Gordon. *grin*

See, I'd love to anyway, but money is quite likely to be an issue...

Still, ask me closer to the date.
