I don't have residual clown phobia from my childhood because I missed out on the whole clown/circus/Ronald McDonald thing along with primary school, long division, times tables, and other associated trauma (sometimes it rocks to be homeschooled). But I am also not the bravest person in the world and holy fucking crap I found this... frightening.

The only other thing about the so-called plot of this episode that I found interesting:
SAM: Rakshasa.
[livejournal.com profile] lady_larla: *chokes*
SAM: It's a race of ancient Hindu creatures, they appear in human form, they feed on human flesh, they can make themselves invisible, and they need to be invited in.
[livejournal.com profile] lady_larla: *coughs, splutters* I am offended! I'm named after one! (I think this one, right tas?
SAM: They live in squalor.
[livejournal.com profile] lady_larla: Not in any epic I've ever read, buddy.

Idiocy aside, it's nice to see evil from other cultures, but how hard can it be to be accurate, huh?

As for the rest... I really loved this episode. Like, a lot. I thought the characterisation was consistent and consistently good - it was great to see Dean return to the strong, silent, no-chick-flick-moments dude of pre-Dead Man's Blood emoboy. Both their responses to John's death seem in character to me. I absolutely loved the showdown on the road (which, by the way, there were some gorgeous shots in there.) I actually thought the cinematography was pretty good? The show's always been slick but I thought it was also real pretty in this episode. There was some genuine funny, too - oh, jeeze, I just really liked this episode and I can't be bothered being thinky about it, it was great fun.

Oh, and Jo. I was predisposed to like her because... girls. with guns. Makes me go "guh." (Ellen was kickass too but I never identify much with older women, I mean, I loved her but I'm more fond of Jo, especially because I've read the extracts from her diary.) And she PUNCHED HIM OMFG SO COOL. <3 <3 <3 I mean, I think she wouldn't necessarily get the chance to do it twice but he was being so patronising and I was going "Oh, jeeze, they're going to let him get the upper hand because he is DEAN and no way they'll let him get beat by a blonde" but NO, she hit him! Yay. :D I also liked, and this may be a subjective interpretation and I don't know how much of it was scripted, but:
JO: Most guys come in here, think they can get in my pants with pizza, a six-pack and side one of Zeppelin IV.
DEAN: Scumbags!
JO: But not you.
DEAN: Guess not.
JO: *gives him totally sceptical look*

The bit I really like is the look. :P

In a slightly related matter: boy, am I tired of seeing eighteen year old characters get labelled as "barely legal" and people complaining about how characters that look seventeen or eighteen are "jailbait." Okay, yes, I am aware that technically in the USA eighteen is barely legal but... come on, folks. Is there anyone who believes that the larger part of teenagers over the age of sixteen aren't capable of getting it on fairly responsibly? Bah, I don't articulate this very well, but every time I see eighteen year olds having sex labelled as "barely legal" or seventeen year olds being "underage" I just go "bzuh." A label like that predisposes me to think in a certain way about the maturity and behaviour of the people in question and many of them are ways that just don't apply to seventeen year olds.

I REALLY didn't like the ass shot. Um, at all. Even if Dean's checking her out. But OTOH I'm pretty sure it wasn't fanservice so, okay. (Since surely they must know the vast majority of their audience is female.)

And... I've been reading a lot of commentary criticising Jo and Ellen on two levels (Um, I'm not going to address "omfg she's a whore who beat up Dean which is liek soooooo unrealistic and totally emasculates him and how dare they?!" for obvious reasons):
- [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink pointed out, fairly brilliantly, that of the three recurring characters introduced in this episode only Ash has any kind of personality or history beyond what is required by the plot. She puts it a lot better than me and I pretty much can't argue with her, so read her post on that.

- There's a lot of frustration that Jo and Ellen are introduced specifically as non-hunters which I SO feel, I really really do. Oh, here are these two recurring asskicking female characters... but don't get your hopes up because they don't get to do any actual hunting, indeed their only role seems to be the comfort of the weary males and maybe a little bit of research on the side. It sucks. BUT... Jo's Hunter's Blog (archived at the already awesome Family Business) is pretty specific that she is a hunter or would like to be, but is being held back by her mom. Which is dumb, but is slightly better than BustyBarmaid!Jo. (Or not Busty. What would be a similar adjective for the backside?) So, yeah, all is not quite lost on that front.

I didn't read this entry properly bc it is 1.26am and I am fairly drunk but I am totally scamming on the 16-year-old guy we just hired at work. Though he is taken and I have no chance, BUT STILL, IT'S NOT CREEPY BC HE'S TOTALLY LEGAL.

IT IS CREEPY but also perfectly legal, SO THERE.

Creep him out so he leaves and I can have his job! *whiny*

That creepy thing is the rub. I'm realising that even 19 and 20 year old girls who I see are really a little creepy as I get older.

Bwahahaha and in Canada we argue about whether or not 16 year olds should be allowed to vote.

*grin* OK, I don't go quite that far, but I'm glad someone's having the debate. ;)

Well, it's because in Ontario, we're all required to do a course in Civics by the time we're 16, so they figure we have the knowledge to make an informed decision on politics then.

For some people (IE ME. Because for my final project, I said that I wanted to see a liberal minority government with a strong new democrat opposition) it's true, and for others, it definitely isn't.
