Also, I'm having another stab at my enrolment, and - I have never been affected by timetabling clases before. Never. But ENGL313, the class I could study Buffy and Coraline for? Clashes with my poetry class, the ONLY class I am absolutely committed to in the first semester, the one that I actually got of my ass and sent a portfolio in for. And not clashes in a half-an-hour or one-hour a week way; oh no. Clashes in a 2-5 vs 3-5 on thursday afternoons kind of way. Siiiiigh. So I'm thinking, maybe the 20th Century Novel class instead, but. :(

And that's bad enough (and heart-breaking, because I want to leave this stupid city at the end of next year, and does VUW have anything even nearly that cool? uh. NO. So either I stick around til half way through 2008 which I just don't want to do, or... I don't take this course, and that is just NOT an option.) But then I go to see my second semester classes, and sure enough, Postcolonial Literature (which I didn't even want to take that much, only more than I wanted to take anything else; second semester English classes suck balls, frankly) clashes with Philosophical Logic, the only class I was really committed to in the second semester. I could take NZ lit - it does feature Katherine Mansfield, Denis Glover and James Baxter, who I all love, and only Frank Sargeson who bores me - but... NZ lit? Really?

To top it off, biomedical ethics, literally the ONLY second year phil class I can bring myself to take in the second semester (the other options are Greek Philosophy, Cognitive Philosophy that's all about animals, Philosophy of Art - no thank you - and Cyberspace, Cyborgs, and the Meaning of Life. Which sounds interesting but... come on. I know the Three Laws of Robotics. I read science fiction. I watch genre television. I've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. I refuse to believe they can tell me anything I don't already know. Plus, it clashes with NZ lit, which I think i'm going to have to take.) anyway, Bioethics clashes with NZ lit too. I don't wanna take Greek Philosophy, guys, but I also don't wanna take Eighteenth Century Worlds. SOMEBODY SOLVE MY PROBLEMS IN A WAY THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE ME TO MAKE MY WHOLE FIRST SEMESTER ENGLISH AND MY WHOLE SECOND SEMESTER PHILOSOPHY, or alternatively three third year papers in one semester, because I'm pretty sure they frown on that.

Also, life here continues to be WTF. In today's news, I hung up on Jako's father (surprisingly empowering) and Mike's bike was nicked from the Briscoes carpark (with bolt-cutters, natch.) I think I preferred my life when it was less soap opera.

I feel your pain. I had to give up the 100 level ARTHISTORY paper "After the Revolution"-twentieth century art-because it clashed with my ANTH clashes. So I get to do Pre-Revolution art AGAIN. YAY.

Argh, how silly. If it helps, the boyfriend did bio-ethics and LOVED it. It's all he wants to do now. But then again he's not really into taking logic and you are so perhaps you come at philosophy from different places.

Ummm...can't really help with the Philosophy thing, but as for English? My advice is *definitely* stick with ENGL231. I reckon you will love it...well, I did at least. And it's fantastic that you got it, especially cos I knew you were quite anxious about it at the start. So yeah...looking forward to hearing all about it, should bring back some good memories. ;)

As for the others? I did the 20th century novel course and didn't like it AT ALL. Studying A Clockwork Orange and Katherine Mansfield were the only bits I actually enjoyed. I'm not sure if it's still the same lecturer, but his style of lecturing just didn't click with me as well. He...dithered a bit too much for my liking. Didn't stay on track very well, and my notes ended up being completely incomprehensensible by the end of it. And I just found there was FAR too many books to squeeze into one semester, personally. But hey, it might be different now.

As for the others? I didn't take either the NZ lit one or the Post Colonial one- but I've heard very positive things about each. Apparently the NZ is fabulous. Same lecturer for the novel course that I didn't like, but I haven't heard too many complaints about him from this course. Not a bad workload either from what I've heard. Post Colonial sounds pretty sweet, and the lecturer, Philip Armstrong, is fecking brilliant. I had him for two papers, and he knows his shit, and is very approachable and friendly with it.

Also...do you know if they're still running the 300-level Creative Writing Master Class with Owen Marshall? I did that one in '04, and I reckon my writing style has improved SO MUCH since taking it. Mind you, he's a bloody harsh marker (almost failed me, in fact) and he is a little bit...high schoolish in his approach. And I don't think the rest of the class dug my writing that much- mind you, I was one of the youngest in the class, so yeah. But yeah, that's another option you could take if you were keen, yo.

Hope it all works out, eh. And, yes, I'm so feelin' wit' ya over the whole Christchurch thing. Loved the Uni, loved my friends, hated the city. It began to seriously eat my soul after a while, and even though I miss my mates, leaving the place wasn't such a bad decision. That said, dunno if moving back to Welly was a good one...but that's another post.
