So, pursuant to my last post, I watched Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, REALLY enjoyed it, and rushed through the back half of the first season of Torchwood. Turns out to be fabulous and either the early episodes of S1 were radically different or I was in a better mood this time, anyway, whatever, I liked it a lot. Also, I like Jack/Ianto. And gay smoochies.
I think I watched the Jack/Ianto kiss in End of Days approximately 13,000 times. In fact, stay right there while I go watch it again.

Okay, back. *fans self*

As I was saying! This show, so much fun. I totally see what [livejournal.com profile] sennical has been saying about lowered or altered expectations, and I think I approached this show from a Who perspective. But Torchwood to Who is not like, say, SG-1 to Atlantis or Buffy to Angel (although the latter is closer) - in some respects it has more in common with a whacky crossover. Yes, there are aliens and they chuck in a mention of UNIT and Saxon every now and then, but otherwise, you know, not at all similar, and coming from the relatively shiny, ambitious, slightly precious world of Who to the downright moral ambiguity of Torchwood - well. Also, there is a minor quality thing, although I think some episodes are really excellent. On the other hand, it's kind of a shame when I'm comparing Torchwood's The Monsters Are Really Cannibalistic Humans episode to Supernatural's The Monsters Are Really Cannibalistic Humans and not really being sure if they suffer in comparison to each other or just, I don't know. Anyway, Countrycide: basically The Benders recast for five! Which doesn't bother me, because The Benders was a big favourite of mine in S1, but you know, I'm just saying, identical.

The sex stuff! OK, predictably, I think Jack/Ianto is the best thing since cheese on toast. They are basically just yummy! And so, ohmigosh. Okay, full disclosure, sometimes I think John Barrowman is just a bit much. I mean, I love Jack, beyond compare, but you put him against some characters and it's just, I don't know, cringe. (Actually, James Marsters' character was a bit like that for me.) But Ianto is kind of like Nine - they have perfect chemistry. This is obviously not a shy thing (because Nine is not that shy)... I don't really know what it is. I love the kiss in End of Days because it's... I don't know. it's really beautifully posed and shot and feels genuinely intimate - loving. It feels genuinely loving without being OTT like Jack/Jack in Captain Jack Harkness. And then the date scene - GOD SO CUTE. Gareth hyphenated-name and John Barrowman have brilliant chemistry, IMO.

Gwen/Owen. Um, I really, really loved Gwen/Owen. And I am generally deeply squicked by infidelity, like, DEEPLY. But Rhys, I don't know. On the one hand, I really love some of the stuff we see of Gwen and Rhys. On the other hand, the contrast between Gwen and Rhys and Gwen and Owen - perhaps it was the thrill of the affair, but Gwen and Owen had palpable sexual chemistry, whereas Gwen and Rhys seemed (mostly) to be cosy. And that's a trope I dislike (that committed relationships lose the sex.) And also, I just find Owen significantly more interesting because I do, totally irrationally, sigh.

Also, I really REALLY do not like the idea of Gwen/Jack, except in the one-night-stand I'm-hot-you're-hot-we-work-in-the-most-oversexed-environment-ever-let's-do-it way. I mean, that would be hot (I think Gwen is absolutely SMOKING hot.) But in the weighted-glances kind of way? Not so much. Except in the sense that Jack expresses almost every emotion sexually (kind of like fanfiction, actually) so, I suppose... I mean. They're close in the show and I enjoyed that development, so. We'll see, I suppose, but UGH NO JACK/IANTO PLZ.

In other news, had a spectacularly relaxing weekend. *twirls* Life is beautiful. (The girls are beautiful. Even... the orchestra is beautiful!)

I agree with EVERYTHING you said up there. Especially the stuff about Gwen/Jack and Ianto/Jack. I really dislike the former pairing because to me it's just boring. Ianto/Jack is by far the more interesting of the two, in my opinion.

I don't know if I would say that Gwen/Jack is boring, but it definitely is to me - does NOTHING for me whatsoever. Similarly, Ianto/Jack reminds me of a helluva lot of slash pairings, but you know what, tropes are good.

I love Rhys lots. I hope he gets some more screentime and development this season -- it looks likely, so I'm hopeful!

Aw, I hope the same for you then :) that would definitely make Gwen/Rhys a lot more palatable to my tastes.

I heard somewhere that the actress playing Gwen said she and Rhys would be monogamous this season? So hopefully more cuteness. I still haven't got past ep six but one of the things I definitively did love about the first half of S1 was Gwen/Rhys.

I actually really liked the season after ep six. Why don't you try Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and see how you like it?

That scene between Gwen and Jack, where he said he'd been thinking about her while he was away... that disturbed me. To ask Ianto out after Gwen basically knocked him back looks like an effort to cheapen the Jack/Ianto thing - I don't want Ianto to come across as second-best
