(no subject)

AND I feel like doing that favourite lyrics meme again. I don't know why.

1. "Free to run around all day..." "Well that's definitely out of the question!"

2. "I hear your key/turning in the door/I won't be hearing/that sound anymore/and you and your sin/can leave the way you just came in..."

3. "And there's no question why/you're driving to kill some time/racing the powerlines/back into town..."

4. "Recommended at the price/Insatiable an appetite/wanna try?/To avoid complications/She never kept the same address/In conversation/ she spoke just like a baroness..."

5. "When you're lost in the places you don't care to stay/a blinding romance to blow you away..."

6. "And the people bowed and prayed/to the neon God they made/and the sand flashed out its warning/ in the words that it was forming/ and the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls!"

7. "All the times that I've tried, keeping all the things I knew inside (stay, stay, stay) / It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it ( why must you go and)/ if they were right, I'd agree, but it's them they know not me (make this decision alone)/ Now there's a way, and I know that I have to go away..."

8. "I'm only asking because I wanna know/how you wanna feel."

9.  "The word is churlish!"

10. "Imagine being a Kennedy/fool without a remedy/to watch your family die/world loves the sacrifice"

11. "Well Momma look down and spit on the ground/every time my name gets mentioned/Pappa said oi, if I get that boy I'm going to stick him in the house of detention!"

12. "Always thought that I would love to live by the sea/to travel he world alone, and live more simply/I have no idea what's happened to that dream/'cause there's really nothing left here to stop me."

13.  "She left all her things, well, her books and her letters from him/But as the sun rises on Mary, it sets on him."

14. "A pocketful of mumbles such are promises/all lies and jest!"

15.  "Well it's alright, it's alright/you can be forever blessed/Still, tomorrow's going to be a working day/I'm trying to get some rest." (really, I love every word in the song. Just FYI.)

16. "Flogging the rockinghorse/getting nowehre/we are a pair to behold/you like a funeral, me like a fair/and nobody cares for the show."

17. "chan chan!" (this one's impossible, I should just tell you it, but I will give you the hint that the whole song is in SPANISH, or something, and so I don't understand ANY of it. This is the only lyric I know.

18. "Remember my dear this time last year/The sunsets were late and the days were long/And the nights were filled with song..."

19. "It's late at night, I;m feeling down/There are couples standing on the street sharing summer kisses and silly sounds..."

20. "A band of angels coming after me.."

Whoo. :p

it keeps signing me out >_<

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2004-09-30 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I only recognize 1 and 9. :O (But they are both brilliant, so that is okay, I suppose.)

(I love "Brainy the Poo." "What is this poo business?" "Must you sing?" Best lyrics ever. ;D)

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2004-10-03 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I do, but not well enough to know the lyrics. xD

[identity profile] sixth-light.livejournal.com 2004-10-01 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
1) Lion King?
2)A Dido song, from the new CD
3)Drive (Bic Runga)
5)Bic Runga (Gravity?)
6)Sound of Silence!!!
7)Father and Son
10)Glad I'm Not a Kennedy
11)Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard
12)Life for Rent
13)Danny and Mary? (not sure about the title, but it's another Dido/Life for Rent song)
14)The Boxer
15)American Dream
16)Be-all and End-all
18)Bic Runga...I can quote the next couple of lines, but not the title...
19)Radio (Corrs)

I had the most hilarious argument with my sister last night over Brooke Fraser's "What To Do With Daylight". Ellie insisted the lyrics didn't mean anything. I insisted they did, insomuch as any pop love song's lyrics mean something. I should have reminded her about American Pie, or Bohemian Rhapsody. Pop lyrics do not have to make sense. Simon Morris wrote a hilarious essay on "How To Write a Hit Song", and he emphasised this quite strongly. (Film reviewer guy off National Radio. Very good at it, too.)

1, 2, 5, and 18: you suck. titles, girl... Especially number five, I know you know that song really well (and it's not Gravity.) :D You got all the artists right, though. Except number one is totally obvious, you fool. Number 15 is, in fact, American tune, and number 13 is Mary's in India.

OMG WHY IS NO-ONE GETTING 20? DO I NEED TO QUITE THE NEXT LINE? IT IS SO SO SO SO OBVIOUS! *falls over laughing* You are all going to DIE when I tell you.

The song title is actally "Arithmetic," but hey. And the words so do mean something! I mean, there are SO many more nonsensical songs... look at At the Zoo, or practically anything by Bob Dylan.
Speaking of "Arithmetic", does this verse not totally remind you of Dairine?
"I've been counting up all my wrongs
one sorry for each star,
see I'd apologise my way to you
if the heavens stretched that far..."
But I still agree with you, pop songs don't have to make sense. Of course it's nice if they do- but I'd take Bohemian Rhapsody over a crap song-story about boy meets girl blah blah ANY day.

[identity profile] decado.livejournal.com 2004-10-01 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think I may be missunderstanding you, you're not saying that Bob Dylan's lyrics don't mean anything are you?
ext_2569: text: "a straight account is difficult, so let me define seven wishes" image: man on steps. (Default)

[identity profile] labellementeuse.livejournal.com 2004-10-01 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, never. I'm saying they don't neccesarily make sense. it's not quite the same as not having a meaning. In fact, many songs that make conventional sense are completely lacking in meaning, by which I mena a semi-original thought or contribution. :p

[identity profile] sixth-light.livejournal.com 2004-10-01 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I don't know titles. I don't own the CDs. I just copy yours and then listen. I could sing you them... :P
Interestingly enough, that is the verse my sister quoted at me to prove the song had no meaning. I argued that it did, because...hell, I don't need to explain it to you. Meh. I love Ellie, but understand her? Never.

*HEADDESK* that so has meaning! So much meaning!

Yeah, I'm with you on the not-understanding thing. o.O
