(no subject)

Had a weekend away in wellington that was by turns amazingly wonderful (seeing old friends and my family) and screamingly shitty (seeing... my family, shitty weather, getting sick for the first time this year). But the absolute capper is getting home tonight to find that my precious and onl;y a few months old external harddrive has independently decided to WIPE EVERYTHING and I can't find any of the sixty-odd gigs of TV, movies and comics that I had saved there. I am about reading to KILL THINGS. Please, please, if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can recover any of it, I'll love you forever.

listen to it at see what sounds its making, if it sounds like its not engaging or something then its probly something phisical. But first try some sort of system doctor progrram to look for files. If all else (and i mean ALL else) fails try freezing it.

How would I freeze it? (& yeah, really won't try it unless desperate. :P)

[identity profile] mandor700.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
like put it in a freezer. Comp techs do that as a last resort coz the contraction/expansion of the metal can set it right again.

o.O Crazy. OK, thanks!

There are programs available online for data recovery. They're not that great, but you might get some back, though it will take a long time. About 24 hours or so. Try searching download.com for hard drive recovery and see what you get. Then if it's a professional version try torrenting it, that usually gets you a full version.

So the hard drive is just... completely blank? That's really odd. Have you tried connecting it to another computer? Where did you get the hard drive, btw? (When I got my new 300 gig baby it wouldn't work correctly because I didn't have Service Pack 2, so make sure someone hasn't done something to your computer maybe.)

If you can't recover it then ouch, but you've seen my list of stuff and I can maybe help you get some of it back.

At first it was just completely blank - like I'd gone through and deleted all my files. Then I checked properties and it has no space used AND no space available. And now I unplugged it and plugged it back in and "USB device not recognised."

*mutter mutter*

Thanks for the tips. I've had this one for a few months and it's been fine, really excellent and I love(d) it. I got it from... gawd, can't remember, PC world or Computer World or one of them. A chain, not a little local one. My PC's fairly up to date with drivers and Service Packs and that kind of thing, so...

The worst thing is I hadn't yet burned SPN for you. :( I'm going to redownload ASAP (when I, you know, have somewhere to put them... the kicker is that I really *need* that hd; without it I get a lot of messages telling me I'm running out of space, which is tiring.) but I can't say when I'll have it out to you. I got the DVD when I got home yesterday and it pretty much saved me from running out screaming into the pouring rain and, you know, going noisily insane and jumping in front of trucks, so, thank you!

Well, the positive thing about it having officially no space available is that it probably hasn't actually deleted anything, it's just totally fucked itself. I'd really advise trying it in another computer, or checking your data cables. If it's not recognizing the drive then you might be able to get it going with a geeky friend.

No worries. Someone just gave me The I.T. Crowd today, a bunch of South Park episodes, and The Ninth Gate, so I'm sweet for a good while (oh and I should be doing homework. Pfft.) Glad you recieved it :) if you want anything else let me know :)

I'm really, really hoping that it is fucked, yeah. Which sounds crazy, but considering it should still be under warranty and maybe the shop guys will be able to get it back... *crosses fingers* Yeah, we tried it on a couple of other computers (all Macs, but still) and didn't get anything, so.

Oh, believe me, I will. ;) But, yeah, I'll get it out to you whenever I can.

That's a pickle! As a prior commenter said, definitely try it on a different computer first. Also, try chkdisk. start menu->run->cmd.exe->chkdisk e: or whatever drive letter My Computer says it is.

That is all I can offer.

"chkdisk" is not recognised as an internal or external command, program or batchfile. Suggestions? :-/

Thanks for the help anyway, though. *kicks things* Tomorrow I'm going to take it into the shop, since it really should still be under warranty and I have a feeling I won't be able to write to it. I haven't been chucking it around the place, so....

This means WWIII is on the horizon. That's just terrible!

It is probably hardware or somehow a virus destroyed your partition table. But then again, if it didn't destroy your primary hard drive's partition table... who knows. Definitely take it in. Chances are it is hardware.

Good luck.

[identity profile] labellementeuse.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Welllll, it wouldn't chkdisk for the C drive either, and that's working perfectly fine (or, you know, as fine as it can be on a laptop that I've dropped off a washing machine and also just dropped once or twice; it has a big crack in the casing and a bare corner. But it's fine. :P)

homg you are making me so unhappy with your grim and depressing diagnosis. *sobs*

[identity profile] schmidtey.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with Ben in entirety, there are loads of programs on the net for this sort of problem, and it's a common fact that even if you told it to delete the files you can still get them back.

But if nothing works, throwing it in the freezer can do wonders. Seriously.

Yeah, I'm going to take it in before I stuff around with it because I don't wanna, like, void the warranty and hey I'm just as likely to break it. :P But yeah, if the worst comes to the worst....

[identity profile] schmidtey.livejournal.com 2006-08-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you can't void warranty for putting it in a freezer... :P
