Not sure where Stuff got their statistics from, but according to The NZ Herald - At the 2001 Census, nearly 78,000 people ignored all the stated options and wrote New Zealander or Kiwi, at least 3000 of them of Maori or Pacific Island descent. Quite a bit less than 50% I'd say.

For what it's worth, I'm ticking Maori and New Zealand European.
