labellementeuse: Sam has her mouth open and her hand to her mouth. She might be eating popcorn? (sg1 what's sam putting in her mouth?)
I didn't take photos of this or time it, but I was really pleased with how the meal I made last night turned out, so imma record it here in the hopes that I repeat it later.

Relevant to everyone's interests, today's/yesterday's XKCD was laughable in kind of the opposite way to the way it usually makes me laugh. I mean, really?

ALSO: I wrote fic! It is Nikita fic! Only one of you is in that fandom and she beta-read it for me (<3) ... but hey. Outrunning the Bear is Jaden-centric and rated, IDK, PG for swears. Spoilers through 1x09.

Up next: catch up on Nikita and White Collar. Mmmm television.
labellementeuse: a girl sits at a desk in front of a window, chewing a pencil (misc the higher common sense)
Oh man, I so badly wanted to get these up before reveals, but JUST TO PROVE that I did write all of this stuff before New Year, here are my prelim recs!
three YW, two TDiR, and some misc. )

I wrote two stories but they weren't very good (not being modest, I really am not pleased with either of them): Some Blessing in Disguise Nikita, Nikita/Daniel, for [personal profile] templemarker, which was not very good despite some stupendous beta efforts from just about everyone I know as well as two delightful Yulechat strangers, Hsifeng and someone whose Yuletide name I don't know (went straight to email and it was not obviously fannish name); and too young to know the time, Circle of Magic, Sandry/Daja, Lark/Rosethorn, for [personal profile] trialia, beta'd by Grevling. Darlingest Tria, I hope you had a good Christmas anyway.

On the other hand, I beta'd some awesome stories! I think this is vaguely in the order in which I read them.

What You See is What You Get (If You're Looking Hard Enough, [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light, The Mentalist, Steampunk AU. So like, I know nothing about this TV show, but I know that this story is fabulous. If you know the Mentalist, you probably will think so as well.

I've Got Four Voices On The Line (the only one I hear is mine, by [personal profile] sushiflop, Animorphs, Tobias-centric. This is as awesome a Tobias fic as anyone could want to read.

The Indian Rope Trick by [personal profile] dustyasymptotes, The Children's Book, Julian Cain. OKAY SO I can't really say I beta'd this because I am the worst person in the world and *forgot it was sitting in my inbox* and then I'm pretty sure she went away. So I'M TERRIBLE. But this story? Not terrible! Julian Cain, at the end of his life.

I know there are a few last-minute yulechat betas I did that I'm forgetting about BUT. I'm also going to sneak in a TOTALLY NON-YULETIDE RELATED rec for...

The Anonymous Tip Job and Professional Contacts by [personal profile] china_shop, White Collar/Leverage, Neal, Hardison, and then the sequel is Neal/Hardison. LOOK AT THAT PAIRING. That is one hell of a pairing, people, is what I'm saying. These were a treat to beta, and they are just exactly right.

ALSO AND FINALLY. a) I did a blog post about the books I read last year; and b) I made the DW post where I've been reading/reviewing/listing these books public, so if you're interested in my (mostly seriously mundane) commentary on more of them, have a look.
labellementeuse: a girl sits at a desk in front of a window, chewing a pencil (wc: *chinhands*)
I don't think of myself as a person who has lots of WiPs, but in between betaing, cleaning, doing 5 loads of washing only one of which was actually clothes, walking to town and having a lengthy meeting with a lovely woman who knows nothing about the internet but is nevertheless extremely demanding and walking home again, I sorted out my My Documents folder (partly, I still have to go through and do the things I've downloaded - I began in exasperation because I couldn't find AAAANYTHING).

screencap of my WiP folder under the cut )

So I thought I'd do WiP meme. I'm going to do the one where people talk to each other! Because that's fun! Also most of these don't have titles yet, I hate titling things, there's a reason I called a fic "The One Where They're All In A Rock Band" and one, okay, subtitled, "Young Wizards: The Regency AU."

Pleasant dreams!

I am doing really super well with , I'm really proud. A couple of days ago I wrote a little snip, about 800 words, of Nikita fic; it's one-sided Jaden/Alex and I wondered if anyone out there would beta it? I'm really trying to improve my willingness to be beta'd, so someone in the mood to take a short piece and rip it apart would be nice. Canon familiarity would be cool but I don't mind if you don't.

Anecdote: So Nikita is a pretty small fandom and there aren't many comms. I tried to post a friendly beta-request let's-get-to-know-each-other-and-share-Nikita-writing-tips post in the fic comm, and I got rejected, which! I mean, OK! I get that some fic comms only want posts with actual fic in it. But when you're in a teeny tiny fandom, to my mind the best thing to do is to encourage people who like fic to talk to each other, make friends, beta. When there are only five pieces of fic in your community, so it's clearly not high volume or spammy, and crucially none of those fic posts thank a beta, wouldn't you think it would be in your fandom's INTEREST to at least set up a beta matching/meet & greet post?! Argh. So anyway then I posted to the like main/noticeboard community because it was the only other option and got absolutely no nibbles, which, argh, frustrating! I might try again next month if I've written any more and pitch it in an even more friendly way, but sheesh.

The other stuff I've been learning from being a MiFu: Apparently the best way to get me to write is to convince me I have an obligation to write something. I won't be able to write that thing ... but I'll find it perfectly easy to write something else. So on Tuesday when I wanted to work on one of my YW WiPs I ended up writing Nikita fic, and yesterday when I wanted to write White Collar fic from [personal profile] china_shop's prompt for me I ended up writing YW; not one of my WiPs, admittedly, but the Nita/Joanne college!fic I've kind of always wanted to write. (Turns out the trick was writing from Joanne's POV, not Nita's.) This is a tricky proposition because we really don't have a lot of characterisation of Joanne other than that she's a bully, and I'm kind of hoping she's gotten over that by college; so it's basically writing a Nita/OFC story. So probably no-one will read it, but that's OK! I'm enjoying writing it. I managed 450 words yesterday which is actually really good for me, and then 1300 today, which is EPIC for me. (I used to struggle to make the 1000-word Yuletide minimum.) Who knows how long it will be? I'm hoping not too long so I keep my momentum.

Also today: I baked bread, learned a couple folk tunes, and applied for an overdraft. Very Lady Artist. By the way, I really appreciate everyone's words of support the other day; they came at just the right time.
labellementeuse: rayk and fraser (from the punching scene): ray's hands are held up as if to say "stop". fraser is gesticulating. (dS STOP! in the name of mounties!)
I think this is the fastest I've ever gotten into a fandom: there was a clips pimp of Sherlock (BBC) on Saturday, I went home and started watching it right away, and now I'm reading John/Sherlock like it's going out of style. This is quite incredible when you consider that the RDJ movie didn't strike me as slashy at all. (What?)

some thoughts! on yaoi! and sherlock! with many spoilers through the Great Game! and gratuitous Doyle quoting! )

Pursuant to g/t I've decided to try being a Better Fan, which is happening in three ways:
- I'm going to leave a comment on every fic I read on the AO3 this month. Perhaps I should rephrase: every fic I like/finish. It might be pretty short - as I said to [personal profile] china_shop at g/t, I am pretty critical, and often after I've gotten the six-word squee out of the way I only have negative things left to say, but I HATE giving outside of approved spaces - but yeah, we talked about how archives get fewer comments because people expect archive commenting to be crap, but the AO3 commenting services is actually about as powerful as LJ/DW's, so there's really no excuse.
- I'm going to start deliciousing fic again. I don't think I've delicioused a fic since yuletide last year. tsk tsk.
- I miiiiight start uploading my own fic to the AO3. This is a vexed decision because I kind of heartily dislike a lot of my old fic, but I also heartily dislike people who are all, my old stuff sucks, don't read it! Because you never know who might really want that Dairine/Kit Evanescence songfic, right? (I wish I was making that up. But no.) Anyway, decisions! They are difficult! Sigh.

Somewhat relatedly: I have both AO3 and DW invitations, and anyone who wants one should let me know!

The other fannish thing I've been doing lately: more icons. These ones are Nikita icons (WATCH IT. WRITE ME FSLASH. TY.) But first! under the cut: a screencap of Alex totally checking Jaden out! )

Teasers:

1. 2. 3.

etc )

Credits:
- caps for 1-13 from [livejournal.com profile] forensicduck's screencap recap of 1x04.
- caps for 14-22 from [livejournal.com profile] docrock06 in rawr_caps.

Rules of Engagement
- I like it when people comment, crediting is nice but not essential
- nobody likes a hotlinker
- textless icons can be used as bases. also if you want me to put text on something I can. but I'm not very good at typesetting, so you might want to do it yourself.
labellementeuse: An icon from the 200th episode of SG-1 with Thor dressed up as Rygel from Farscape. Text: YOTZ! (sg1 farscape fandoms collide)
[personal profile] china_shop keeps spamming her flist with White Collar screencaps, which is pretty fabulous, and I ended up making some icons out of her caps. Thank you China!

1. 2. 3. a few more under the cut )

A couple of episodes of all the new shows I'm watching have aired, I thought I'd talk about them a little bit. What I say will be, IMO, basically non-spoilery, but I know I have some really spoilerphobic people on my flist so I'll be cutting anyway. Which reminds me: I am basically chill about spoilers unless they're, like, Sirius dies at the end of OotP, so it's really hard for me to tell what's going to ruin someone's enjoyment. However, my aim is to NOT do that, so if I spoil you, please let me know and I'll do my best to modify my behaviour.

Hellcats )

I'm going to talk about Nikita outside a cut because I really want people to watch this show. I nearly didn't start watching this show, and I know why: all the promos I saw made it look like this kind of grim show that was about one woman going it alone and being grim and sad and having an ambiguous morality, and she would be surrounded by men with even more ambiguous moralities, and it would be harsh and cruel and sad. And I thought to myself: ugh.

However, that is not what the show is about at all. Nikita isn't going it alone; she does interact with other women all the time, and one in particular; and also, Nikita is funny and chill and does not mangst all over the place (although if any character was entitled, it would be her). Maggie Q has this amazing, warm, expressive face and this show is just a lot more obviously influenced by shows like Dark Angel than I thought it would be. So y'all: I really really recommend that you watch this show. 1x03 would be a perfect pimping episode, and dammit, I just realised that if I'd started watching this show when the pilot aired I'd have been able to pimp it at [livejournal.com profile] get__together. Blast.

My point here: watch this show. Watch it watch it watch it.

Hawai'i Five-0 )

I have nothing to say about Undercovers because only the pilot has aired, except to say that it was as cute and funny as I was expecting and I really enjoyed it.
