Those watching the TV coverage at home - including a shot of a despondent 10-year-old clutching a copy of Mister Pip to his chest, telling a reporter that he’s not so sure he does now want to be a writer when he grows up - will down another beer, then another, to drown their sorrows. Wives and kids will cop a blow or two from frustrated, drunken husbands.
