Every time I get home from work Sundays I am BLOWN AWAY by the number of Who uploads. PAGES AND PAGES.

But I have like an hour to go on my download and I'm borrreed. SO:

COMPUTER SPYING MEME

1. Comment with a request to see absolutely anything on my computer. My desktop, my documents, my bookmarks, my latest works in progress... absolutely whatever you are curious about. Request it.

2. I will respond with a screenshot of the very thing you request.

Also, we can do the taking-photos-of-things-in-my-house, if you want, but I warn you that photographs of my bedroom may, all medusa-like, strike you into stone.

GOOD CHOICE, especially because my books aren't actually in my room (no space, no bookshelves, and also, I would never get anything done.) However, it's a very sad small collection I have with me - when I moved cities (for university) my parents would only let me take a few boxes since they knew I'd be coming back to my hometown in a few years. And then the only built-in bookshelves were... in the laundry? So I have a box in the garage too, of books acquired since, but they're mostly trashy KA Applegate and kidlit, so. (Also, omg, I am now so ashamed at how messed up they are - when I moved in they were sorted, not just by author, but by GENRE. t'was awesome. But uh, not anymore.)

CHARLES DE LINT. ZOMG I LOVE YOU.

I can't make out a lot of the others, my eyesight is teh suck. I sympathise with only having a few books, though. I'm leaving for college this summer and I'll only be able to take like a box. Which is going to kill me.

Oh, K.A. Applegate. Animorphs or Everworld?

HART. I just read The Blue Girl and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I tend to prefer the Newford short stories to the novels.

dude, I can barely make out most of these and I know what's there :P but yeah, the pain of being separated from my CHILDHOOD is ongoing.

Both, actually! Although chiefly Animorphs in all their overly serialised glory.

Most of what I've read of de Lint is his short stories, and a couple of his YA novels. I've really been meaning to sit down and read more; the only actual Newford novel I've read is Someplace to be Flying. Have you read any Bordertown?

God, I loved Animorphs up until... 60? 30? The point at which they brought David in.

Yeah, I've tried one or two of the adult novels and they haven't particularly grabbed me, so generally I've steered away... haven't read any Bordertown (or Someplace to be Flying, actually.)

The David 3-parter was like... 21/22/23? 28/29/30? *checks scholastic* ah-ha, 20/21/22. I liked it before and after, but yeah, David was LAME and made rachel just a leetle too dark. But um, I still kind of have a lot of love for them, and maybesorta occasionally sit down in the library/pick them up at book fairs...

I always love the descriptions and plot ideas, but the writing doesn't grab me as much for some reason. I keep trying, though.

Bordertown is pretty cool. It's actually an idea shared between several authors, actually; there's a collection of stories set there (The Essential Bordertown) and a few short stories in some of de Lint's collections. My favourites are the two YA novels by Will Shetterly; Never Never and Elsewhere I believe are the titles, and his wife (Emma Bull, who I love) also wrote one, Finder.

David pretty much made me stop reading. Actually it's lucky I read the first few out of order, because I'd never have kept going if I'd started with the one where the Andalite gets eaten and Tobias gets stuck.

They are purty! Much more appealing than my poor clarinet.

Are strings hard to learn? I'm a woodwind girl, myself, but I;ve wanted to learn some string instrument of some sort or another.

I wuv 'em.

They are kinda hard (guitar, either classical or pop, is somewhat an exception) - the thing about string instruments that's different to any other is that there's absolutely no pitch guidance - wind &c you just have to tune your instrument and then you're in tune - for the violin, you have to tune four strings and then you still have to have every finger in exactly the right place. Plus, tone. Which makes them really daunting to learn (once you get to a certain point pitch becomes less and less of a worry, because you start to learn in your body where things go, but tone is always an issue) - the bow can be hard to manage - they can make lots of horrible noises when you're just starting. I think it's really rewarding but it does kind of take awhile to get where you can count on making a nice sound most times you move the bow. But they are lovely, IMO, once you've got a bit of skill.

That's nifty-sounding, I'll have to look them up! I'm a big fan of YA fantasy, actually, so excellent, recs!

see, he goes away after two books! so it's way better. yeah, "the beginning" or whatever it's called is really kind of HORRIBLY TRAGIC, although IMO not as bad as the END OF THE SERIES which breaks my heart, but.

I'm a huge YA sci-fi/fantasy fan. Have you read New Skies? It's a short story collection with some truly excellent stuff. More sci-fi than fantasy, but I adored it. Especially the one by Greg Bear that had Alan Turing in...

Yeah, but I had a short attention span as a kid. I jumped from obsession to obsession like-- well, actually, like I still do, but it was worse back then.

I remember hearing about how it ended. That is TEH SUCK.

Yeah, the Andalite Chronicles weren't nearly as nightmarish as the Ellimist Chronicles. I mean, we're talking like existentially depressing, on a massive scale. And I was like fifteen when I went back and actually read them and finished the series.
