Okay, I'm not talking about politics anymore. For at least the next 24 hours.

Instead, let's talk about Yuletide! I can't believe assignments are out already! I'm totally excited to write mine. Who else is doing Yuletide? I was going to do a big post on all the fandoms I signed up to write for, and I might do that anyway later, but now that I know what my assignment is I don't have quite the same impetus to be all "I'm terrified about writing this fandom! I'd love to write this fandom!" I offered a whole lot more fandoms this year, anyway. Blah, blah... yuletide letter time! (ETA: now with the original requests for my own edification.)

Dear writer,

Hi! You are pretty and shiny, and you love some of the things that I love, and that not many other people love. You are, therefore, a rare gem. Thank you so much for writing for me this year.

I will begin my letter by directing you to some of the general stuff I wrote in last year's letter. Everything I wrote there is still true! But I am more tolerant of gen now, so if a gen muse strikes go for it. Unfortunately I've been all politics through to skip=60 lately, so you won't find out much about me by browsing unless you're very dedicated. Here's some more general stuff:
- I know I requested a lot of het this year, and examining my fandom list I may appear a bit conservative. (Young adult fantasy series from the 80s, young adult fantasy series from the 70s, young adult adventure series from the 30s. Um.) I want to assure you, in case you are bored to tears by my requests, that I am really a wild and daring fanfiction reader! Outside Yuletide I read slash almost exclusively (but I have nothing against gen). I have read extensively in fandoms like Supernatural, Stargate: Atlantis, and Harry Potter. It is, therefore, very difficult to surprise or squick me, so you should feel free to be as risque as you like. (Or not! I am a full-spectrum reader.) If you are a slasher and really don't want to write het, surprise me with slash in any of these fandoms!
- Requests for happyfic still apply. I like happy endings, children, careers, futurefic, porn, not-porn, makeouts, camping, conspicuous consumption of caffeine, adventure stories, gratuitous use of magic, period costume, feminism, women, unusual relationships, siblings being siblingy, break-up make-up (A lot!), emotional misunderstandings and/or RESOLVED emotional neglect, third person narrative, music and people playing musical instruments.
- I don't like: women giving up their lives or personalities for their husbands (see last year's letter for a more detailed explanation of this squick), people not having sex before marriage UNLESS you are writing Arthur Ransome, people waiting unreasonably long to have sex (for example: if you are writing about Tom and Carl and they are dating and they are over the age of 16, and they proceed to wait three years to have sex, I... will find this a fraction unbelievable without a compelling reason why they waited. A period defined as "reasonable" varies from character to character and period to period, though, so use your judgement (John and Nancy probably wouldn't leap into bed together before marriage, for example.))

Onto some fandom-specific stuff! Most of my requests were pretty detailed except for the YW request, but I'm duplicating it here so I have a record.

Young Wizards

I said: almost nothing, any characters.

I'm thinking now: There is a pretty good chance you matched me on YW, and then looked at my utterly nonspecific request and wanted to smack me. I'm sorry! I was in a hurry. (OTOH, there's also a pretty good chance you know me, so: hi!) I'm difficult in this fandom because it is the one true fandom of my heart, and therefore you could write anything in it and I would read and enjoy it. My OTP is Tom/Carl. I also love Nita/Kit, but I often enjoy reading stuff where Nita and Kit are with other people and I can't imagine myself reading something where Tom and Carl are seeing other people. You could make me really happy by writing the fandom's first NC-17 material with Tom and Carl! But you could also make me really happy by writing a vignette about Kit finding his manual, some adventure gen from the early days of Nita and Kit's partnership, or fic about Dairine's or Darryl's versions of day-to-day wizardry. I love weird pairings, too - the weirder the better! I've read and loved Kit/LP, Nita/LP, and Dairine/LP; I've read and loved Kit/Ronan; I want to read and love Carmela/Ronan, Dairine/Kit, etc, etc. Go nuts! Caveat: No Harry/anyone, please.

Swallows and Amazons

I said: 1. Very little, John/Nancy; and

2. I'm really fond of wartime!S&A&Ds. Imagine a Foyle's War/Swallows & Amazons fusion, or cast Peggy or Dot as Rosie the Riveter. Which of the women's auxiliaries did they go into? I love Nancy a lot, but I'd really like to hear more about Titty, Dot, Bridgie, even Daisy. How about drawing on Roger Altounyan's real life for something about Roger? - or the D's at Bletchley Park! If you like this idea go as nuts with it as you care to. Kill anyone but Nancy if the muse strikes you.

I'm thinking now: I wrote this about a bunch of the things I love about this fandom. I'd really read anything focusing on any of the women, per my requests - which were pretty detailed, so I won't give you any more for fear of swamping you with detail. I had two requests for this fandom: one was John/Nancy, and one was WWII fic. I would love those about equally. Nancy is my favourite, as my requests maaaaay have indicated ;), but I like all of them!

Chrestomanci

I said: I'd really love some Conrad's Fate-era Millie/Christopher or some two-or-three-years post-Pinhoe Egg Marianne fic, including Eric (not necessarily in a romantic way, although I'd also like that.) I love castle!fic (when everyone's at the castle learning! and causing Dramatic Teenage Magical Accidents!) and I love fic that emphasises the girls' and women's powers and talents over the boys, although there's a fine line between that and "Girls are good at this! and boys are good at this! And they get married and complement each other perfectly" which I do NOT like because it's a little close to gender essentialism.

I'm thinking now: Chrestomanci! I'm thinking about doing a research project on women in DWJ next year, so anything you write about women in Chrestomanci I'd really love. I especially think the differences between Marianne (and her "sisters" in DWJ's novels like Charmain Baker and Roddy Hyde) and Millie could be explored in a really interesting way. Also, I totally adore Millie/Christopher when they're teenagers or young adults.

Thanks again, yuletide writer! I hope you enjoy writing for me - I know I'll enjoy whatever you do (I already can't wait til the 25th.)
