Day 7 - A crossover/constructed reality vid you love

Unnatural Selection and Seven Nation Army, by [livejournal.com profile] charmax.
Multifandom; Terminator, BSG, others, Charles Darwin's Origin of Species; killer robots take over the world; violence, fascism.

[personal profile] caramarie actually talked about Unnatural Selection as well in this spot, and I went back and forth on including it for ages (Hurricane was nearly here but I think I'm saving it for question 20), but ultimately these are very fine vids which use fannish and non-fannish footage to tell a story that isn't about fandom at all. Well, sort of - they're about what happens when killer robots take over the earth. So sort of about fandom. But mostly what they are is essays about science fiction and the nature of humanity (one of the things that SF does best) and I think they're killer.

Best Bits: In Unnatural Selection: The foot on the skull at 0:50 is a strong image used well. I like that it's a tad off-beat because I think it would have been a bit on the nose otherwise. I think the "this monkey's gone" sections are very good throughout in their flirtation with being literal - just enough and never too much, because I think those could have been handled really poorly. "the devil is six" - this whole section is amazing; I love that she waited to give us Six herself. The use of text, which I typically dislike, in this vid is really good. The ending from 3:08, which focuses on specific Cylons rather than Cylons as a group, is very fine - "we were made in God's image/that body was made to look like a person" is practically Leoben's dialogue.

I think 1:22-1:34 and 2:42-3:22 in 7 Nation Army are pretty good statements of the messages the vids, as a duo, send. Particularly that shot of one person leaning out while being held by another. 1:36 in that vid - "every single one's got a story to tell" - is also very good, and I think it's terrific the way she didn't go for the obvious to that lyric.

Day 8 - A vid you had to watch multiple times to understand.

Origin Stories, by [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss
Buffy/Angel, It's Nikki Wood's Fucking Coat, violence & how. If you like Spike (or if you don't!) you should watch this vid.

I'm not sure I understand this vid completely even now. I mean, I think the top-level message is pretty clear, yeah. What I found, though, is that vid left me with, first, a huge hate-on for Spike that hasn't gone away; and a desire to watch it fifteen or so times until I got it. I think I do, ish, now, but I find the way the vid can move me without me necessarily understanding it quite wonderful.

Best Bits: 0:53 to 1:03 and then 1:04 to 1:10 are both very clean, clear - lovely timing in both but especially the former - very good pairings of lyrics with words, especially "coloniser" and "new recruits", but generally too. From 1:55-2:11 - this sequence just broke me, like, how is that even OKAY? And then following it with Faith - remember the dialogue from that scene? "Are you the bad slayer now? Wait, am I the good slayer now?" That sequence makes me think that the answer to that question is hell, yes. The whole last minute of the vid with Navi Rawat (guise, by the way, can we make her famous please? Numb3rs just got cancelled, so...) but that last minute is unbelievably coherent and I got everything about it straight away.

Day 9 - A vid that makes you cry

Ing, by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro
BTVS; Anya; gore; downer ending. Spoilers through 7x05.

God, I have nothing clever to say about this vid, and perhaps that's because it's not a specially clever vid - I mean, I think anyone who can make a vid is incredibly clever, obviously, and I think it's very difficult to make very simple things. What I mean is that all it does is put together Anya in front of you, and then take her apart again - pretty much what the show did - and oh my god, guys, I love Anya. I love her five times as much as I love Willow and three times as much as I love Tara. I probably love her - deep breaths - I probably love her slightly more than I love Faith, and to be clear, Willow, Tara, and Faith would all be on my list of characters I love most in all the world - Tara and Faith, minimum, would be in the top ten. So this vid - for most of the way this is a happy vid! Happy! I love all the "ing" sequences, with people totally Not Getting Anya. And yet, it makes me sad.

Best Bits: I kind of think it's hilarious how much Anya's hair changed over the seasons! TARA'S EYEBROW at 1:35! I really like this as a narrative vid, rather than for its individual moments of technical amazingness.

OMG BED.
