So... it's ten past twelve and I just watched the New Zealand Music Awards. I enjoyed it very much and am therefore in no fit state to go to be. so.
Um, I thought everything I wanted to say could fall neatly into categories; one for each of the three winners, one on the live music, and one on WTF?
WTF?
Firstly, the presenters. It makes sense to use C4 presenters- I'm not sure what it says about the state of NZ music (Couldn't we at least have got Dave Dobbyn, or something?) Mikey Havoc, even, makes sense. But the presenters for some of the awards... well. Jonah Lomu? Carlos Spencer and Kees Meeuws (sp?) Carol Hirschfield and John "Bloody marvellous" Campbell? Can I have a WTF? I mean, they were good presenters, especially the last two; funny and right tone. But still.
Secondly, I LOVED the little video things they had before they announced the finalists- they were hilarous, especialy Best Male Solo Artist and Best Female Solo Artist. But, um, the one for Best Album? Al Bum? Not funny. wtf.
And thirdly, I feel ripped! The ones they showed on television were NOT the complete music awards. How do I know? Because hello, where was John Psathas for Best Classical? Goldenhorse for Best Airplay Record? You know, maybe they could have skipped some of the eight million Scribe items to see some of these? They were more like the NZ Hip-hop and Pop Music Awards. Not Cool. WTF!
Scribe
Okay. Scribe Won Everything. And exageration, maybe, but not by much; especially in the aforementioned cut version of the awards, Scribe was up on that stage so much it wasn't even funny, especially as I'm not a huge Scribe fan. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and admire what he's doing for the NZ music community, rap just isn't my thing. But he was genuinely moving when he accepted his awards (all seven of them... there are only about 25 awards at all, remember) and I have always been rather fond of the Stand Up video, which is truly awesome.
Dimmer
Okay, they won Best Group and Best Rock Album and I have no idea who they are. I've never heard of them and I've never heard their songs. That's sad! Anyone got any info?
Brooke Fraser
You know, she's sweet and all, and I love Arithmetic, but there's really nothing to her, I feel... :-/ I don't like slagging her off but really she's not particularly original or unique. There are lots of artists like her and only Arithmetic has ever really spoken to me of her stuff. She performed Arithmetic on the night, which was cool, but then I've never really liked her live anyway, and I missed the orchestra backing.
The Live Music!
Okay, this was undeniably cool Actually, I have to say, I loved the whole ceremony; the winners might not have been my picks but boy they were well done. And the live music was pretty good, except for Adeaze who, um, really stuffed up. I like them, too, they just performed very badly. But highlights: Verona! Steriogram, who I'm not a huge fan of but they have a _great_ frontman. Scribe was good, of course...umm, who else? Oh, okay, the REALLY BRILLIANT TOUCHES: Hayley Westenra singing the "If you love me" bits with Savage. That was fantastic, very funny. And, and and and OMG OMG THE RODGER FOX BIG BAND playing NIRVANA! The song, not the band. With some guy called Dave who I think is the Elemeno P guy! AND AND AND Rodger Fox Played! Yes! Yes yes yes! The ONLY thing on the whole show NOT popshit! <3.
So that's it, and my mother's shouting at me so must dash. But it also brought back to me how much I love New Zealand music, and New Zealand. Small, yeah, but we're pretty damn cool anyway. <3

Date: 2004-09-25 07:23 pm (UTC)Oh, that's not helpful, is it? Well, put it this way, the only winners of the whole show were Scribe, Brooke Fraser and Dimmer; two of whom I don't like, on I'd never heard of. ;)

Date: 2004-09-26 07:35 am (UTC)Well, according to http://www.nzmusicawards.com, she was nominated for Best Female Solo Artist, International Achievement, Highest Selling NZ Album, Airplay record of the year. She lost to Brooke Fraser, Hayley Westenra, Hayley Westenra, and Goldenhorse. But I believe she has won some of them in the past- she hasn't released anything new this year, after all.
