I'm back in Christchurch and have, in fact, already started classes again (at eight this morning. Oh, gods.) I am looking forward to my courses this semester:
LING102: Sociolinguistics. I really don't know what to expect about this one, but it looks interesting, it's currently one of my (many) putative majors, and the lecturer is the same guy we had for LING102, who was both funny and comprehensible. He was also very organised and the course was straightforward but interesting. So.
MATH105: Calculus, Algebra, compicated stuff. This is the full-year 12-poitner, and it was pretty good for the first term because we had a great lecturer but then he left and we got this other guy who was... well, he meant well, but he was shocking. BUt he too has left, and we've got someone else who doesn't seem to be as good as the first guy but is already, after one class, streets ahead of guy #2. So I'm feeling much better, especially as we've just started on integration and that is a bitch.
FREN124: French Language 1. I'm looking forward to this because I have missed French a lot, but... this is a course that you can take if you either passed a first-semester course or got 60%+ in Bursary French. I did the latter- well, NCEA Level 3, but same difference. So I've had six months off French and I can't remember much of it and most other people in the class will have already done a term of French so... yeah, not really feeling this too much. sixth_light is taking this as well and I haven't had to compete with her since I was 12 so, uh, I am kind of not looking forward to that very much? ;) It would be okay if this was, like, Maths or something (which she do better than me at but at least she doesn't love it.) This is French. She took 7th form French in sixth form and, IIRC, she still got an A, curse her.
Yeah, I'm feeling threatened. Shaddup!
Also, I strongly suspect Francesca will be taking this (if not, she'll be doing 2nd year French, which would not bother me in the slightest. :P) So... yeah, I think I will work on this course a bit.
I have HPTPS to read in French, though! *cheerful*
ENLG107: Shakespeare Looking forward to this one, too. We're doing two comedies: A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Merchant of Venice, two tragedies: Hamlet and Othello, a history: Henry V and a late romance: The Tempest.
I'm pretty much cool with all of these: we studied The Merchant of Venice in 7th form last year. I've acted bits of Othello and seen both the opera and the Summer Shakespeare. I've seen A Midsummer Night's Dream at least once on video and I think once on stage, although I don't know it nearly as well as Twelvth Night which I would have preferred. I just saw a production of The Tempest and I think I've seen the video as well. I don't know much about Hamlet (shocking, I know. I haven't read the Scottish Play either...) but I have read Wyrd Sisters, which helps, right? And I just know Lucy will tell me all about Henry, won't you?
BUT. We're starting with Dream, which means I have six hours to find it, buy it and read it. >.> I don't think I'm going to manage it, unfortunately.
Also, I'm nervous about my first-ever university essays. o.O
Something about my holidays: I bought two GORGEOUS pairs of boots- one black mid-calf, and one red ankle- which are, well, GORGEOUS, along with blk and pink stripy witches' stockings and BRIGHT RED stockings which are, well, my stockings are cooler than your stockings, okay?
I went skiing with la famille, includingdawnraided and rewihendrix. It was super-fun and I've improved a lot. I ache a bit but it was so worth it and now I really want to go again, like, all the time, but don't think I'll manage it. :( $$$ make the world go wrong.
I also caught up withnicthehat and miriamus, with whom I saw Mr and Mrs Smith. It was totally awesome to see them, as well as insane_ophelia who I had afternoon tea with and who is feeling the strain of sixth form, poor baby. :( She looked fantastic anyway though. :D AND I saw Catherine, who I have to mention because she may or may not be reading my journal- megaffe and her and I went to see the World Press Photo Exhibition which was... well, I kind of came out of it with post-traumatic stress disorder and the tendency to panic every time I saw a photograph. ;P More seriously, it was really, really cheap- only $2- and TOTALY worthwhile, if anyone has a chance to see it it's in Shed 5 on the waterfront- I'm not sure if it's making it out of wellington/to Auckland/Christchurch/wherever but if it does get to where you are, really, really make the effort. Put aside an hour or something because you may not want to hurry through.
Also, myself andmegaffe finally broke the 4 am barrier with sixth_light! Now, see, me and Lucy and Meg have been having sleepovers at each others' houses since we were eleven or so. They have gradually begun to fall into a pattern: chocolate, movies, chocolate, talk, chocolate, talk, chocolate, popcorn, chocolate, movie, chocolate, Lucy pikes ut and we all go to bed. In this timehonoured method we've watched lots of films (often multiple times. <3) and eaten truly astounding amounts of sugar. Hpwever, as I'm sure you've noticed, the final part of the routine seems a little.. odd. Well, Lucy is a truly wonderful person with all sorts of admirable characteristics. Unfortunately, one of her less-great characteristics is a tendency to do stupid things like, you know, listen to her body and bodyclock. I mean, wtf is up with that? At some point during the night- and it's been gradually pushed ahead over the years: at first it was eleven, then twelve, then 2, and then for the past year and a half, 4 am- some really annoying part of Lucy's brain starts telling her it's time to go to sleep, at which point, with the stubbornness that is only a problem when I and Meg have to deal with it, Lucy gets into bed, pulls the blankets over her head, and goes to sleep.
I mean, wild horses couldn't drag her away. It's totally unbelievable.
BUT. Last week, at Meg's house, we totally had a landmark! We were watching the last half of Season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which we're kind of... binging on... and OMG WE GOT HER UP TO SEVEN AM GO US. Actually, I think it was mostly the general coolness of Buffy and Giles Who Rocks That Show- I mean, he's a librarian, how cool is that?- but still! Mileston! *thrilled*
And now that I have told that totally pointless story, I close. It's good to be back.
OH WAIT. I FORGOT TO SQUEE. OMG HBP LESS THAN A WEEK OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
