Neither would I, but they need to somehow ensure that they are about as practical and affordable as current cars. The thing I watched on Campbell Live about hybrid cars showed them costing far too much. ($55,000 or so IIRC). Not worth the initial investment - most people are probably not going to save $50,000 plus interest on a loan to afford a car that expensive in petrol over its life. Besides the fact that initial investments are off-putting since its "all at once" or paying more due to a loan.

Current cars = current common usage cars. The second-hand ones from car dealerships for $6,000 or so.
