Okay, National supporters, I understand that sometimes, when you're desperate or bored, cheap shots at the Labour leader's appearance or personal characteristics are just necessary. Hey, I've been known to do it myself, although I flatter myself that at least I don't usually abuse Brash's physical appearance.

But why would you spend the morning chalking "Helen is a man" and "Helen has a penis" all over the campus? Because let me tell you: there is only one response to that, and that is "But Don Brash hasn't got BALLS."

My icon has never been more appropriate.

I need to go home and change into something red now, because me and [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light are gonna go watch Helen speak outside the library at 12.30 and for some reason when I got up this morning I must have though "I know, I'l wear BLUE today! Jeans, jumper AND skivvy. Sigh... I don't know that I actually have anything red except a hat, wristbands, boots and a too-small top, but NEVER MIND.

Vote Labour!

I'm the Vice-Chair of the Princes Street branch up at Auckland University. Conor (Young Labour prez) is the man to get a hold of. His email is conor_roberts@yahoo.com ...
Young Labour has been incredibly active up in Auckland - Conor has been great in thinking up new and different ways to campaign - you may have seen us waiving "VOTE LABOUR [tick]" on the news on a motorway overbridge...
Good on you for being in Labour - perhaps at the next summer school after the election I'll run into you - if not on the Clarion Tour (www.clariontour.co.nz)

oooh, you were at the Canterbury speach? I saw on the news protesters cut it short... what was it like? you'd think people would have slightly better manners...

I wouldn't.

I remember the barrage of eggs that greeted John Banks at Auckland Uni.

As Helen said, its a student speech. They're always the rabble rousers. Its interesting to see so many nats and act supporters amoungst the students but thats about all I'd say.

Tui, did you know the chick with the T-Shirt that said I Love Helen that was on the news?

I missed the news, and I don't know the chick, but I saw her (well, I recognise the description of the shirt, I assume it was her.) She was up the front and cheerful-looking.

I was- hmm, I missed the news report but I didn't think we were that rowdy. noisy, yeah, but me and L were quite close upfront- if you were watching closely and they panned, you might have seen our hats! Lucy's was bright pink and mine was red! On the other hand, the people on the steps got quite close up and were all waving signs so perhaps it seemed worse, from Helen's perspective, than it really was... was not impressed with behaviour of a bunch of frankly tasteless National supporters who had clearly come intending to be aggressive, in a group all waving banners a lot of which basicaly said "You're ugly, Helen". Pissed me off because
a) that's frankly rude and tasteless and
b) they were the reason the crowd was up so close- they kept moving forward.

I mean I don't think Helen was in any physical danger or whatever but they also made it difficult to SEE.

There were idiots, yes. My RA is in the Young Nats and informs me that they are desperately trying to disassociate themselves from said idiots.

I mean, protest, fine, but at least let us HEAR the damn speech.
