... although in some ways I'd prefer a list of why gay marriage is right, rather than a list of reasons why it is not wrong. You may win debates by through rebuttal, but elegant deconstruction doesn't really convince anyone that you're right, only that your opponent is wrong.

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is "Wrong"

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3)
Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behaviour. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and
can sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Please post this in your journal if you are for gay marriage.

ETA: for three days I had "gay argument is right" rather than "gay marriage is right." All you who didn't notice suck, myself included.

speaking of all this you might be interested in this argument about the whole biblical basis of homophobia.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/daegaer/90014.html

one day i think i'll memorise it and then try to quote it to my athiest homophobic uncle who uses 'god doesn't like it' as his excuse. or maybe i'll just kill him with a metric tonne of logic.

(sowwy, it's too early/late to be bothering with prettying links and navigating the shift key)

What I've loved the most about that list is that it's America-centric. It just makes me laugh, as I know people who resort to the first halves of some of those arguments. Although it also makes it somewhat more disturbing in the long run...

*giggles at number 7* So what would bisexual parents raise? One of each? :D

I've seen a lot of stuff that chips away at the 'biblical basis' for this stuff. I like one that says the Bible has more to say on poverty and helping the needy than it does about sex.

*g* Well, some attitudes are- unfortunately- universal.

And LOL- nah, nah, more bisexual children. OMG SUCH A THREAT TO SOCIETY, SOME OF THEM MIGHT PRETEND TO BE NORMAL AND GET HETEROSEXUALLY MARRIED AND PERPETUATE THE DEVIANCY AND YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TELL like whoa.

What do you mean when you say *g*, just out of interest?! I've noticed you do it heaps of times before, and I'm guessing it's *grin* but I'm not sure...:P

Hehe, yeah, this is the girl who dies laughing during all the religious episodes of the Simpsons, no matter how offensive they may be! Did you see the one with them all doing an Irish jig in Catholic Heaven?! Hilarious! Except part of me wanted to shake my fist at the TV and yell, "Not all Catholics are Irish, you idiot!" lolz

Aw, and let's not forget Father Ted! :P

By the way, I love the icons you made for [livejournal.com profile] megaffe...I'm guessing no-one else can take them?

It's such a lazy excuse. Just say you're a homophobic bigot already.

Why no, I don't believe in God, don't go to Church, practice Christian values, or have even read the Bible, but some dude in a pub once told me that there's some sort of thingy in there about God hating fags. I hear they have a website too.

Ew. Even hypothetically that burns.

(Look, ma, I found my shift key.)

From: [identity profile] labellementeuse.livejournal.com
ABSOLUTELY NOT. ;)

What do you think I think of it? ;) I think that coming from a religion that
-has celibate priests wtf
-professes to love the sinner, and hate the sin- that is, active homosexuality is a sin
-also professes that we are all sinners and are supposed to be forgiven by God etc
it's blatant hypocrisy and lies. Also, I think it's part of a move to scapegoat gay priests for the child abuse scandal, when statistically the overwhelming majority of sexual abuse against childrn is committed by straight men. *shakes head*
