Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

-- Robert Frost

Or: damn, it's cold, and it's only March.

But you are a Kiwi! You must put aside these foolish notions of cold - after all, if you weren't sitting at your computer you wouldn't be cold! You must get up and exercise briskly, or, if you refuse to move, put on another jersey. Heaters are for those overseas types. Show them what real Kiwis are made of.

(Yes, this is pretty much verbatim the speech I recieved every time I mentioned the cold throughout my entire childhood. Minus the patriotic aspect.)

I've had that speech too, a lot, and we're one of those bizarre families thaqt actually does have central heating.

... I kind of buy into the propaganda, though. Heating in a student flat is probably obscene. ;)

But, see, there's a difference between being smart and energy-saving and having super-low energy bills (which we are and do) and actually freezing to death (see the Otago Flat Internal Temperature Story). And it seems in NZ that most people fall on the side of freezing.

*amused* I keep hearing about this cold, but it's not really heater or fire weather yet. And I'm formerly from way up north.

I'll probably be whimpering like a baby when there's ice outside, though.

*shivers* see, we don't *have* any heaters, and my room is right on the corner of the house so it has two exterior walls, and lots and lots of windows. So heat basically goes straight out the door.

Think it'll snow this year?

Poor thing. Big warm blankets/duvets/jumpers are the thing, then.

I hope not. I think it'll probably frost, though. Was talking about it with a flatmate, who said it might do. *shivers* Is bad enough now.

That poem is special for me, not in itself, but because my very favoritest sixth-grade Writing teacher read it aloud to us, then told us that it meant a lot to her becaause it described her relationship with her daughter's father.

I love teachers who aren't afraid to be honest with their class- I think it makes the classes more interested especially in something so hit-or-miss and subjective as poetry...

I did a double-take. "Wait, what, cold but it's only MARCH?" Then I realised that you live in the southern hemisphere. :)

For me right now, it's 90F outside in March. Weather sucks worldwide I guess. Because where you and I live are the only two places in the world? Well, I guess some people have good, moderate weather right now.
