We're stuck in mid-term. There is absolutely nothing for the opposition to do, other than think long and hard about why they lost last time. Well, not about the real reasons, of course, but about who to blame. And because you can only go so far blaming your PR people (minions, despite the evidence from 80s cartoons, really aren't that disposable), the right way to point fingers is upward.
On that basis, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say:
This isn't the media, and it isn't the NZLP slinging mud. It's just casus belli for some likely lad in the party ranks to knife dear old Don between the shoulderblades and rise to become head honcho. Based on the nature of the "scandal" Bill English looks like natural replacement, provided that he isn't too principled to do unto Don as Don did unto him.
Ha.
Of course, this is New Zealand, and we don't do comebacks here - but there's a first time for everything, isn't there?
