So apparently my flist is either going to Dis for being a heretic, or is exceptionally good (
miriamus and
sixth_light, Purgatory and Level One respectively.) Uh-huh.
so a music rec: I'm listening to the
Rhythm of the Saints album by Paul Simon for the first time in what amounts to several years. I had forgotten how great it was: this is probably a more obscure one of his post-Simon And Garfunkel solo "continent" albums (the most well-known of which being
Graceland, or, What Happened When PS Went To Africa.
Rhythm of the Saints is What Happened When PS Went To South America. I'm pretty sure thre are also Mexico and England albums about although, funnily,
paulsimon.com doesn't seem to want to record pre-S&G albums. I find this odd, people, because I
like the
Paul Simon Songbook.) ANYWAY. My point is: this is a fantastic album. If you don't want to buy sight unseen, go to your library and check it out (or, well, he's probably well-off enough that you can countenance theiving if you like. >.<) Familiar Simon lyricisms, although I think this is a lot more pictorial throughout than his earlier stuff. Texture-wise this is a very lush album. In some ways I really like the feeling of this music- it's a real wash of sound. Sometimes the lyrics aren't clear or diverting, but the sound is just fantastic; other times the lyrics are great as well. Things like
I can't run but I can walk much faster than this--
Can't Run ButToo many people on the bus from the airport
Too many holes in the crust of the earth
The planet groans
Every time it registers another birth
Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time--
Born at the Right TimeSome people say a lie’s a lie’s a lie
But I say why
Why deny the obvious child?
Why deny the obvious child? And in remembering a road sign
I am remembering a girl when I was young
And we said these songs are true
These days are ours
These tears are freeWe had a little son and we thought we’d call him sonny
Sonny gets married and moves away
Sonny has a baby and bills to pay
Sonny gets sunnier
Day by day by day by day--
The Obvious ChildYes boss. the government handshake
Yes boss. the crusher of language
Yes boss. mr. stillwater,
The face at the edge of the banquet
The cool, the cool riverI believe in the future
I may live in my car
My radio tuned to
The voice of a star
Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edge of a thunderstorm--
The Cool, Cool RiverAnd I think I'm going to go rename my journal with Rhythm of the Saints lyrics. *grinning* later.
PS: fabulous guitar on this. Forget Jimi and the Manic Street Preachers,
boys, and play like this man.
PS: re GOF trailer: *facepalm* THERE WERE BOYS FROM BEAUXBATONS. There weren't girls from Durmstrang, so that's fine, but OMG PLEASE PAY ATTENTION, if France was totally populated by girls
there would be no more french babies And that would be sad because babies speaking french are OMG SO ADORABLE.
