[livejournal.com profile] sixth_light's and my best friend was down staying with me for a week a few days ago, which is pretty much why I've been a little quiet. It was totally awesome to see her, we did ridiculous and antisocial things like lying on the couch watching Stargate and Doctor Who and Gilmore Girls. But we also did a day trip to Oamaru (3.5 hours on the bus each way, we're totally heroes) to see a school friend and her three-month-old.

We happened to mention why we were going to, you know, godforsaken Oamaru to the driver, and he made a solemn face and was all, oh, that's terrible, isn't it lucky you two are on the right path, blah blah. He acted all surprised when we told him the father had stuck around, and to be truthful? He kind of said what we had been expecting. This school friend dropped out before exams, smoked a lot of pot and I suspect plenty of other drugs, worked as a stripper for a year before deciding one weekend that she wanted to move to Dunedin, god knows why. While there, she met this guy, an apprentice electrician (so at least there's a reliable income, I guess) and a week later moved in with him in, yup, Oamaru. Five months later she "fell pregnant" (to use her own phrase) and in January she gave birth to Logan.

So we were kind of expecting the whole thing to be awkward and uncomfortable, a disaster.

But you know what? It wasn't! It was actually incredibly great! She seemed really happy and it was pretty obvious that they both worshipped her wee boy (who's actually a very BIG boy for a three month old, holding his own head up and all that stuff. And a beautiful smiley baby! He was very good while we were there too, didn't cry or fuss - we were only there for about five hours, of course, but he seemed like a honey.) And Craig, the daddy, seems like a nice guy - um, I was genuinely shocked when I met him, actually, because he is NOT to her normal taste in guys. Um, thank god. While he was out of the room she said that she didn't have itchy feet at all which - man. I'm just thrilled for her.

So, in conclusion: while I probably would have chosen something different she seems really happy, she's taking very good care of the kid who's adorable and... it looks like it all might maybe work out. I'm stoked.

ETA: also and incidentally, can anyone recommend me a podcast or two? Looking for some stuff to listen to on buses, at gym, etc. I'm especially looking for something in comics, preferably with a large side of funny, news and reviews, etc.

I lived in Oamaru for nine years, and I protest your description of it as "god-forsaken"! God could never have spent enough time in Oamaru to *forsake* it. He just drove through real fast, shaking his head at the penguin statue.

True! Unless God was on the bus! In which case he would have been forced to stop for half an hour at the tea rooms. Half an hour is PLENTY of time to forsake Oamaru. ;)

Heh, sorry for insulting your home(?) town!

I listen to the TV Guide podcast every week. It's pretty American TV-and-movies centered, but they generally spend a good bit of time talking about Heroes and Lost and BSG (when there're new episodes, of course). The discussion can get kind of quirky, but I like it.

^^'' Yeah. . . my boyfriend's cousin (18 or so. . .) is pregnant and due in some six weeks. . . She's really excited, which I find absolutely terrifying, and sometimes I wonder "What on earth is she thinking?" because neither she nor her boyfriend (who, as of yet, is still around, which we think is a good sign) have anything more than a high school diploma. . . I just don't get it. --''

On a side note, after next monday, I am SO done with french. ARRRGH. *bangs head against stuff* NEVER EVER EVER TAKING FRENCH AS A CLASS EVER AGAIN. VOLTAIRE NOTWITHSTANDING, BOREDOM. RAWWWRRR.

Yeesh. :( Although, seriously, if I was eighteen and having a baby I would want to have a positive outlook, I think that's the best way to be... rather than being sad. I mean, while, yeah, I couldn't and wouldn't want to, I think it's important to be supportive of people who are happy in their own choice, you know.

YAY. :D join the club of french drop-outs!
