Last night I handed an asparagus roll to the prime minister, which was more or less the most exciting thing I've done all month. I was volunteer waitressing at a Labour party fundraiser auction type thing, which was fine, fun even - a lot of walking around with trays of food and booze, a lot of sloshing around in the kitchen with free wine and nibbles, a little bit of listening to Helen talk (she was fine, although I think saying "Hey! We're in better shape than we were in 1990!" - I mean, if we were in worse shape, I would be pretty worried. Anyway, she was positive and a little bit funny.) Actually, seeing her was VERY surreal, because she was wearing, I swear to god, the same red jacket that she wears in every single labour party promotional picture - OK, I just google imaged and she's wearing a black jacket. *facepalm* But OK, you would recognise it if you saw it - it was like she stepped out of a newspaper. VERY STRANGE.

I avoided her for most of the night since I was absolutely terrified I'd spill orange juice all over her. This is, I think, why I am a crappy member of my generation - I sincerely admire the PM. Not enough to not make a sarcastic running commentary on her speech, but, you know... I think she's great! I do! I think she knows her job and works hard at it, I think she's twelve thousand time more familiar with her party's policy than National's leader is with his, and twice as much as any other leader (except maybe the Greens), I think she's good at what she does. Blah blah blah, I'm not cynical enough for my generation, I feel.

And also, it's very considerate of all of you to plan your weddings for end of next year sometime, it means I'll only have to get the one dress. How about you get together and make sure they're all on different weekends, eh? That'd be great!
Kisses,
Me.

I'm with you on that second paragraph. I really like and admire her.

Also, she was wearing that jacket at the Children's Book Awards too.

It's so surreal, right? Hee.

I don't think there's anything wrong with admiring Helen - she's pretty much universally acknowledged to be the most powerful and influential PM since Muldoon, and when you consider that she's led the Labour Party for sixteen years, look at the policy that's been enacted under her leadership - for better or worse, we're not going to see another PM like her for a good long while, when she retires.

Perhaps we should start a Helen Clark fanclub. *g*

Re: weddings - you realise that for at least one of those you're going to need a bridesmaid outfit, right?

and when you consider that she's led the Labour Party for sixteen years

Just a quibble, but it's fourteen and a half - she became leader in December 1993. If it was sixteen years she'd have led Labour through the 1993 election, which she didn't.

Quibble accepted - I was guesstimating wildly there, based on "sometime in the early nineties." At age six, my interest in politics was as-yet unformed. :P

I still remember the day that she was appointed - my father was annoyed because Mike Moore is a south islander.

I think she may end up beating Keith Holyoake's record as New Zealand's longest serving party leader - depending on whether or not Labour wins this year's election and, if they don't, whether she stays on as leader or resigns/is tumbled.

Right, but you're going to make it nice and pretty, right? Right? (I forget if you've seen "27 dresses", but - you can just shorten it and wear it again!)

I would be in a Helen fanclub!

Well, the plan is basically to pick a colour and tell you lot to show up wearing it, details discretionary.

This is for two reasons: 1) I am cheap and 2) it is possible that the outfit exists which would suit you, Meg, Tas, and Ellie. Somewhere. However, I don't have the century or so required to find it.

We should totally start a Helen fanclub on facebook or something. Dunno if I have the patience for all the Key fanboy spam that would ensue, though.

That's what I thought. although I suppose bridesmaids have to be a bit posher than wedding guests.

Hee!

I would join! And hey, eff the Key fanboys, ugh.

And thanks to the magic of rule 34(a), that group already exists (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2308414029).

Also, Helen Clark has a Facebook page where you can add yourself as a supporter. \o/
