I've only read the first couple of chapters of the bone people, which I enjoyed (I don't know how anyone could not enjoy the first few paragraphs of that book) but I don't think that counts enough to rec her work.
Hmm, now that you mention it I'm not sure either! She's in my head as Maori, I think, but I don't remember where I got it from. Book Council (http://www.bookcouncil.org.nz/writers/cowleyjoy.html) has a photo... urgh, I'm not sure there's a non-icky way to talk about this, but she doesn't look Pakeha to me?
