Anyway. I was wondering if you would care to share your views on america? I have a feeling that i'll have the same!
Anyway.
Im sorry i never properly introduced my self.
My names Brooke. Im 17 and live in the US. I'd really like to learn more about New Zealand and the politics and issues!

Hi Brooke, it's nice to meet you. :D And, heh, thanks, I think the states needs more people like me to. ;)

As for my views on America... hmmm. Let me stress that Americans, themselves, I have no problmes with. I mean, some of them are nutters, maybe more than here, but some of them are neat. Some Of My Best Friends Are American, etc. However... I'm not so fond of America, the instituition, for a number of reasons. Some of that is that America has basicaly a power monopoly at the moment; there aren't really any countries powerful enough ot keep it in line, which is, well, worrying. Sadly, it also seems to be going particularly conservative at the moment, probably as a result of the government and the President in particular, but also I guess because of how September 11 affected the national identity. I don't know if you've seen bowling For Colombine, but I reccomend it and I think that the points it makes about America being a nation of fear is a good one. it's also consumer driven and too capitalist for my tastes...

What really irks me, though, is the way that America's policies and even most of its residents are extremely inwardlooking- they're not selfish, but they're self centered. As a New zealander who's recently visited America, I was really surprised by the sheer ignorance about my country-
"So, where y'all from?"
"New Zealand."
"Oh, is that, like, in Tenessee?"
"No, we're south. WAY south."
Sigh. And despite this America still has this huge monopoly on international affairs- not only in politics, but in culture. Californication is taking over the WORLD.

Anyway... that's just a quick look at what I think. I gues it soudns kinda harsh. But I'm not, really! :D

I agree completly, with your views. You know it's nice to meet someone who actually thinks that same as you once in a while. Im sure you've heard things about the south being discrimination linked and everything...well not only that but i would have to say 96 percent is very concervitive! I have'nt seen "Bowling for Colombine" I'll have to look into it.Im just worry about the next election because Bush and Kerry are both only for the civil union. But i liked how you put tradition into words in the nz_in_the_world comment. So how is life in N.Z.??? I'm thinking about moving there once i get out of high school to go to school or something!
talk to you later.

You really should take a look at it, yeah- its directed by Michale Moore, he won an oscar for it. ;)

Well, I've heard things about the South... but you hear things about most of rural America, yet one of my best friends is fom a tiny town in the middle of Ohio, so I've learnt not to judge. :D

Life in NZ is okay at the moment, though we seem to be undergoing a rather distressing conservative period- we're hopefully about to pass civil union *crosses fingers*
We have pretty good schools around here, you should definitely take a look. ;)
