Dear People-In-Charge-Of-Costuming-For-The-Yule-Ball:

When it says periwinkle blue, it means Hermione is wearing periwinkle blue. Wierdly, periwinkle blue is not another name for "pink." Hermione? would not wear pink. you bastards.

NO LOVE
me.

PS: that hair is terrible

I heard it was yellow? But agreed.

And we already know they think she should wear pink, because of that hoodie in PoA.

Basically, Movie!Hermione /=/ Book!Hermione, because Hollywood is incapable of appreciating a girl who does not like pink somewhere deep in her heart.

She wore pink in the first book. I think it was a bathrobe.

This doesn't change the fact that she was supposed to wear periwinkle to the Yule Ball, of course, but the problem is that the color is inaccurate, not that there's something intrinsically absurd about Hermione wearing pink. Harry was supposed to be wearing green, too, and his clothes didn't look very green in the first picture I saw....

Did you look at the bit in the article that was all "This is the first time Hermione realizes she might be pretty"?

Pffft. I laughed out loud at that. Not in the movies it's not the first time.

We-ell... dressing gowns/bathrobes are sort of different to ball dresses, don't you think? There's nothing wrong with the colour pink, of course, but it's not a colour I see Hermione wearing in that context, ever.

Probably it bothers me more because it's a symptom of that stupid hollywood/ girly-fying that's been happening to Hermione. *grumpy*

>O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I didn't, I didn't have time. And now I won't, because I don't want to spend the next hour whimpering and catatonic. >:O stupid emma watson. *hate* (okay, I don't actually hate her and I'm sure deep down she's really nice. It's just that she's nothing like Hermione but, much more importantly, she hasn't got any empathy for the way Hermione should be. She probably hasn't even read the books.)

Well, yes, a dressing gown or bathrobe is a different type of garment. (I was really hoping that the dress robes for both sexes would look less like they belonged at a Muggle prom, but oh well.) Still, generally speaking, I like the same colors when I'm picking one out as the other.

Also, I generally resent the tendency some people have to associate pink with the derogatory aspects of being "girly." :)

But I suppose the main thing is, I was annoyed when I discovered that Harry wasn't going to be in green, and after that, Hermione being in the wrong color just made me shrug. Then again, I've never cared for the movie interpretation of the "robes" anyway.

Yeah, but dressing gowns are so often either
-quick or casual purchases
-pastels!!
-bought by your mother
-also, she was eleven.

Whereas ballgowns are the subject both of much more thought and import, and your own choice. I think if JKR had wanted Hermione to wear pink, she, er, would have. :PP

I agree about the dress robes, though. :-/ I had my hopes up when I saw the ones Ron had, which were perfect... but no, apparently not.

We-ell... as I say, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with pink. But it is a colour I associate- in ballgowns- with... well, yeah. Girly girls. :-/ Especially in this case where it seems so symptomatic of what they've been doing to Hermione- I mean, if movie Hermione was just as much of a kick-ass geek as book Hermione, it probably wouldn't bother me so much, you know? But they have to make her pretty. And then she doesn't look significantly more gorgeous in the Ball scene anyway and the whole point of it is lost.

Yeah, me too. *sigh* They do scenery so well; why are they incapable of getting costuming right?

I agree that they got the color wrong. That much is fairly obvious. It's just that the people saying, "Ew, pink, that's all wrong for her personality because girls who wear pink are ditzy and stupid and don't think about anything but frills" (and maybe you don't mean all of that, but it is how the dismissive references to "girly" from various sources come across when they're all lumped together) are almost enough to make me want to defend it out of sheer contrariness. ;) I like pink. Although I will grant that I prefer bright or hot pink to the really soft pastels, and that would make for a pretty overpowering dress.

It was supposed to be blue. It's wrong that it's pink, but it would be just as wrong if it were yellow, or green, or bright orange.

Okay, if it were green I would complain that she had stolen Harry's robes. Which leads to especially weird mental images since they did go and make it look just like a Muggle dress....

Well, bright pink would be fine. Actually, no, you're right, bright pink would be just as bad but I don't think it would be so... symptomatic. :-/ The sad thing is that I probably do think all of those things you suggested about pink; not in terms of, you know, what someone looks good in, but in terms of costume choices. IRL people should wear what looks good and what they like. Costuming choices, though, are about calculated effect: costume reflects what the film suggests about chracters. This can be done seriously dramatically (*coughStrictlyBallroomcough*) or it can be more subtle, but it's still present. :-/ So I guess my point is, I wouldn't care if Hermione wore pink in the books, because books don't tend to make that kind of visual point (apart from the green robes thing, which you're right about); but it bothers me in the film? Especially because apart from the maroon thing (which they usually get right, happily) JKR hardly ever points out clothing colours; why not get it right when she does?

*snickering*

It annoys me how she's so gorgeous...Hermione in the books is plain and kinda nerdy-looking (NOT that there's anything wrong with that :P), with big teeth, and she's awesome that way! I betcha they'll leave out the big where she gets her teeth shrunk, cos they don't need to be shrunk AT ALL!
Grrrr...mind you, guess an average-looking, geeky girl wouldn't be able to go very far in Hollywood. Still, she could have a done a Charlize Theron and uglified herself!

I suppose I see what you mean about color-coding in costuming.

But I still used up all my Annoyed for this one when they didn't put Harry in green. Which I suppose is a bit odd, since I didn't really object to their going with blue eyes instead of causing the actor severe pain, and the green robes were supposed to go with his eyes, but still.

You're right, it was dumb. *sigh*

Yeah, but causing the actor extreme pain is one thing; wearing green robes (or, um. Blue, to match?) is another. :P Besides, he looks like he's wearing a freakin' suit and they're supposed to look just like his ordinary robes except green. :P

BUT MAYBE THEY'LL FIX IT FOR OOTP!

... although I'm pretty sure they're all to stressed during ootp to worry about what they're wearing. *sigh*

Yeah, exactly. And the thing is she was just a kid when she started, she would barely have noticed what she was wearing- and Hermione, too- and they made her all fashion-conscious (except, actually, they didn't start doing that until the third movie, I suppose) and...

oh, never mind. *glum*

I agree. I mean, I love Emma Watson, I'm sure she's a nice person, but she doesn't fit my image or interpretation of Hermione at all.
