I am studying in the library.

When I say "studying" really I mean looking out the window, messing with my hair, banging my head repeatedly against the desk, going on trips to get food and hot chocolate (which no I did not drink in the library), and, only when I have exhausted all other options, occasionally c\glancing at the notes I'm supposed to be reading.

It would doubtless help if I understood the Local Standard of Rest EVEN A LITTLE BIT, but I think I am resigned to just skipping that- I mean, I've looked and looked at it and I just don't get it. So, well, it's lucky all the long questions in this exam are optional- there are three sections, each worth 20%; one is multi-choice on both topics, and the other two are topic-specific and they have three long questions each, of which I have to answer two. So I shall simply not answer anything about the LSR and that will be FINE, or it better be.

Anyway, this is why I am speaking to you at the moment, because I am trying to avoid study some more. :P So, how are you all, in yourself? What are you doing today? Where are you going with your life? And how's the lovelife? I expect you all to answer. ;)

What IS a standard of rest????

How am I in myself?? A little bit better than usual, maybe. I think i have conjunctivitis though :( Today I went to MUN traning and died on my arse. I am no public speaker, sadly :( I don't know where my life is going, but for the next week it looks like my life is MUN. And ym love life in nonexistant, as always.

Ah, well, it's hard to explain (probably because I don't actually know) but I think the Local Standard of Rest is the speed at which the matter (stars, HI regions, nebulae, etc) in the region around the sun has to be moving so that if you were to stand at the centre of the galaxy and look towards the sun, it would seem as if the matter was not actually moving. Um, a metaphor (not sure if it's a very good one): person x is looking at person y. If the ground under person x's feet is rotation, person y must orbit person x at a certain speed- the local standard of rest- for it to seem to x like y is not actually moving (provided there's no background to provide parallax/point of reference).

Aw about the conjunctivitis, how yucky! MUN, though, look out for [livejournal.com profile] schmidtey and also I think [livejournal.com profile] mandor700; actually even Rewi might be going >.> not entirely sure. Anyway they're from Rongotai so if you see sixth formers from Rongotai go say hi they're very nice. Except Nigel. Only joking.

A bit like the earth and the moon then? With the moon rotating and orbiting the earth at a speed so that the same side is always facing us?

Um... kind of. I know the metaphor makes it sound like that. Um, imagine person y is spinning- so person x can see that they're spinning, but to them it looks like person y is spinning on the spot. that's kind of it.

I think.

Eep. So something is orbiting something else at the same rotations per whatever that it takes for the middle one to spin round?

Um... maybe. Kind of. Actually, no, not really, it's just sort of... difficult to explain. :P

MUN = Model United Nations?

My mate [Bad username or unknown identity: Comrade Jezza] did that in sixth form. He was Canada I think.

He managed to be a key figure in their abolishing of the power of Veto in their UN.

I thought that was cool
