Jul. 18th, 2005 04:12 pmDear TV3, Channel 2,
Please stop putting all your best programmes on on Wednesday nights. I have choir.
Don't you think Two and a Half Men, Malcolm in the Middle, Scrubs, CSI, Grey's Anatomy and Numb3rs is just a little excessive, anyway?
no love
me.
My mother has an article on abortion in this week's Listener- actually, it's more about Margaret Sparrow, who's worked for the FPA and the like for forty years, is pro-choice and has a lot of experience to back it up with. The article's well-written and informative, but I feel it kind of fails to make any consistent point- I know my mother's pro-choice, but I come away from the article thinking that whoever wrote it probably didn't vehemently disagree with abortion, but no other feelings apart from that. Which, to me, is something of a failure; even Margaret Sparrow didn't come off all that pro. This is both incredibly uncharacteristic of my mother and also annoying: I feel like the article should at least have had something of an argument, you know?
I have recently surprised myself by leaving two vitriolic comments in
sixth_light's journal. Sorry, L, but sorry only in the I'm-not-really-sorry way, I'm sure you understand. :P It's probably not her fault, or anything (much) but..
I have a free book coming up on my UBS frequent customer card... has anyone read Maddigan's Fantasia, which is the new Margaret Mahy? I can even get a signed copy so I really think I might go with that. (Sadly, it looks like they might have had a signing in there recently because there are copies of all sorts of signed books- The Lion in the Meadow, The Tricksters, The Witch In The Cherry Tree et al. If I'd known, I would have gone; I mean, Margaret Mahy.

Date: 2005-07-18 04:32 am (UTC)Abortion...hmm...haven't read the article, but I will say this: I think it's possible to be pro without being blazingly for it. I mean, I absolutely believe that abortion should be legal and it's a woman's choice and there should not be a legal requirement to inform parents and all that. Because it's really necessary to have the option there. But I do NOT believe it should be the first choice, nor that it is the best choice for preventing children. The best and first choice is contraception. Abortion is a last-ditch measure and should be viewed as such. After all, it's not an easy thing, especially later in the pregnancy.
Maybe it's just that the article was about Margaret (who is an AMAZING woman) not abortion per se, and therefore didn't need much of an argument. Like...if you're writing about Georgina Beyer you're not necessarily going to go in-depth into the arguments for the Prostitution Reform Bill.

I see what you mean, and you'd be totally right, except it's called Making a Choice and the byline is Latest statistics show the first significant drop in NZL's abortion rate in decades. But, insists pro-choice chamption Dr Margaret Sparrow, women should not have to jump through legal hoops in order to get terminations. :P Good try, though.

Date: 2005-07-19 12:15 am (UTC)Well, under the circumstances that you are definately having sex. Why is not having sex not a first choice?
Is sex something that must be undertaken?
This scares me as a father. I think I can understand the 'not legal' part, as it could create issues within a family, but if my girl was going through such a major event and I didn't know, I'd be heartbroken.
All I can really do is hope that I keep my relationship with her open enough that she would be able to tell me.

Date: 2005-07-19 01:04 am (UTC)The kids thing...I understand how you feel, but the thing is that if the relationship is broken down to the point where kids aren't going to tell their parents, there's something really wrong already. And there are a lot of cases where younger teenagers could be in real danger if their parents did find out. I think the law isn't worth the risk of that.

Date: 2005-07-19 03:07 am (UTC)Well I suppose a disscussion on abortion would have to entail an assumption of sex.
But still. Is sex a must? I don't think so. After all, should you or your boyfriend decide that they don't want to have sex, the other would respect that, wouldn't they? (No personal insinuations meant, just example).
Yeah, that's why I mentioned the 'I can understand the legality thing'. But it would still hurt.
