And a link:

[livejournal.com profile] throughadoor just made this post on HBP, spec for bk 7 and, particularly, like two thousand words on Remus/Tonks in HBP. Since she pretty much summed up exactly what I want to say about it- not quite, but pretty damn close- I am going to link you all to it. Especially [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light, with whom I am having sort of hand-waving flailing conversations trying to explain why I don't like R/T. And, um, if I can let someone else do it for me, why not? :P

MAJOR spoilers in that link.

Remus is boring and Tonks has all the personality of a cardboard box, despite JKR's best efforts.

*puts the smackdown on you*

Go read Stealing Harry and then tell me Remus doesn't kick ass.

Actually, you might not like that Remus. I suppose he's not for everyone. But...

OH YES SHE NAILED IT. That is exactly it. If I had more time I would sit down with a red pen and do that myself.

That last bit - she should seriously publish that in a paper. That is exactly it. I completely agree.

Oh. And that whole Harry's-lust-for-Ginny-compared-to-a-newborn-monster. WORST FUCKING ANALOGY EVER. I like the Harry/Ginny EXCEPT FOR THAT.

Re: Harry's mad lust for ginny: I'm sorry, did no-one else think JKR wa trying to be funny? I laughed aloud. I thought it was a joke.

Um.

Read the post and....completely disagree with all of it. It was off screen because it's NOT THEIR STORY (I mean, Bill/Fleur was off-screen except for TWO lines until they got engaged, is anyone complaining?), it was signalled in OoTP, it was the Remus thing along with all the other strains in Tonks' life that made her so depressed (on the front lines of a war here), Remus does not have to be gay or sexually ambiguous to be "other", and at the end of the day, the books are not about him and not about his role and whatever JKR chooses to do with him is who he is.

Sorry, Tui, but that post sort of annoyed me because the basic assumption was that Remus NEEDS to be gay, except....he is evidently not completely gay. To assume that because one character is not gay, the books are prejudiced and fandom is "moving ahead" is....arrogant. Tonks/Lupin isn't about conformity or debunking gay!Remus or anything; it's about two minor characters who fall in love.

But you guys are free to feel that way. I know I'm never going to understand it, is all.

But, see, I'm not convinced it is love. and I don't understand how, as someone who really likes Tonks, you like her characterisation in OotP as someone who, because she is pining, actually becomes ineffective at her rather important job. That really bothers me.

I don't think that was the basic assumption of the post anyway. *frustrated* And even if it was, it's no different to your assumption that x character is straight.

I'm going to stop before I say something I regret.

You may not be convinced it's love, but...well, that argument's going nowhere.

And I never got the sense that Tonks was actually bad at her job due to her emotional state. She wasn't HAPPY. But I don't recall it saying she was useless. After all, she found Harry on the train. Plus, as I mentioned, she is under a lot of pressure and probably facing Dementors fairly regularly. No Auror is going to be happy and sunshine. She just has _extra_ problems which is why she is so depressed.

No. It's not because I'm deliberately trying not to see it. It's because I don't buy the arguments, and I have valid reasons for that. I really, really like R/T. I believed in it, it happened, and I see nothing that I need to "try" to do in that.

That's not what I said. I don't want or need you to ship R/S, or to believe that R/T is OC. But what I would likeagree</I. with them. This is not like a moral disagreement, this is like a disagreement of, of, religion or literary critism- there is not a highground in this (and decades of academic scholarship in the field of literature agree with me on this.)

*shrug* I don't. I mean, I don't see why even R/S fans should be either, because after all, this doesn't really DO anything to your fandom. That's thw point of fanfiction, isn't it?

Why are you people getting so worked up and angry about a pairing in a book? I don't really understand it, but then, I have other things to worry about than who's with who in a book, even in the summer.

Sorry if the last bit sounded sharp (then again, that So? sounded pretty sharp too), it's just I have an exam tomorrow that I haven't studied for and am going to fail beyond all belief. Bah. Hell.

OMG YES
I now take back everything I have ever feebly tried to express against Remus/Tonks and direct the world to this post.
The only thing that saved my mind from exploding upon reading the ship in canon, really, was that HBP read kinda like a fanfic in tone, what with kids hooking up right and left.
