I just said goodbye, probably forever, to one of the sweetest people I know, and I'm feeling kind of wierded out.

Janie's originally from Taiwan, but her father's a diplomat- he's essentially what an ambassador would be if Taiwan had ambassadors in NZ, which they don't becauseChina'sone ofour major trading partners and we don't have the ability of the US to essentially say fuck you to China and get away with it. So Janie's lived all sorts of places and three or so years ago they came to Wellington and she showed up at our school and proceeded to kick our collective asses at Maths and be one of the nicest people I've ever known. Probably the best thing Claire, who some of you know (/of), has ever done was making friends with Janie. They're incredibly disparate- Claire failed out of school, dropped out, failed a university bridging course which she shouldn't really have taken and also because she got stoned four times a day- in herown words- and didn't go to class. She's now working at the Mermaid as a waitress and occasional dancer. She looks okay actually but we worry about her- as I was saying to a friend, if, say, [livejournal.com profile] megaffe or [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light was stripping and waitressing, I wouldn't be concerned because I know they can take careof themselves-it's not the actions themselves I have a problem with. But Claire overdrinks and oversmokes (both sorts) and really isn't taking care of herself and we worry. And Janie most of all-I'm ashamed to admit that although I've tried, I'vekind of given up of taking care of Claire, because she won't let people. But she really loves Janie, and Janie loves her and really worries. Because she's incredibly sweet and naive and brilliant and I hardly ever see her now but I wish I did.

And now she's going back to Taipei to study Chemistry there and is basically never coming back. She leaves Thursday butI probably won't see her again because she has to pack and won't come out in the evenings. :-/

Yeah, so I feel... weird. Disconnected and I'm going to miss her- I have other friends overseas, and in different cities, but I know they're going to come back to NZ eventually. Whereas Janie... probably won't. No, scratch that, she won't, and I know it. It's... wow, I can't get my head around it.

yeah. that was all. i saw her and claire today, as well as doing volunteer work for the Labour party with [livejournal.com profile] sixth_light, basically sticking addresses on propaganda. It was kind of fun and run by a very funny woman, who assured us that we were saving the free world. Plus, we got given armbands.
