Still not dead! But busy, because in about two and a half weeks I'm moving back down to C-town so Very Much Under Pressure, etc. However! Two recs.

Civic Video in Courtenay Place. Although it's kind of misleadingly named- they no longer carry videos, at all, only DVDs- they have fantastic friendly staff and they're nice to you. :P I rang up earlier today to ask if they were carrying Angel S5, and the guy said that they did. I went in and it wasn't on the shelf and they'd actually put it aside for me- without me asking them, and without me identifying myself. And then the guy recognised me. So hooray for Todd and Josh at Civic Video, who are generally fabulous and not bad looking either.

The Chosen by Chaim Potok, which is probably my favourite book ever. Ever ever. If you haven't read it, go out right now and do so. It's about thirty years old, I guess, it's set in Brooklyn (New York, not Wellington) during and after the Second World War and it's about the friendship between two boys. And it's amazing.

I read this great story about Chaim once. 'twas called "They don't call it a mania for nothing...". Fantastic story. It inspired me to go read half of Chaim's stuff. Then I ran out of free time. I think I need to take up that particular pursuit again....

The copy I've got is in A Passion For Books, ed. by Harold Rabinowitz and Rob Kaplan, and the short's "They Don't Call it A Mana For Nothing" (exact title), by Harold Rabinowitz.

Have you read the sequel?

Oh, yes, of course. Not as good as The Chosen but still vv good and apparently impossible to get in second hand shops. *pout* because I went looking for a copy yesterday and couldn't find one. Curses, etc!

Have you read My Name is Asher Lev?

Yeah, I found it randomly in a little bookstore when I was at the beach two years ago. I hadn't even known that it had a sequel.

No, I haven't. :| It's on my Big Fucking List of things I need to read.

I am quite the Chaim Potok addict. Probably my favourite author, in real terms.
