May is New Zealand Music Month and
jayest has been uploading some NZ music to share with her flist. I’ll admit that my flist is mostly New Zealanders, but I think there’s still, you know, stuff to share. So have some music! I may or may not do this again this month, we’ll see. Today: roots reggae and some alternative pop music, featuring: Kora, Barnaby, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Goldenhorse, Strawpeople, Lucid 3 and maybe some others.
Conscious Roots is a compilation CD of New Zealand roots reggae, featuring such illustrious names as Katchafire, the Black Seeds, Salmonella Dub and Trinity Roots. It’s a fantastic collection, and one that’s really representative of a strong movement in NZ music, particularly within Wellington. Highly highly recommended, and from it I picked:
Kora - Barely Can See and Barnaby –Bag of Money>
Fat Freddy’s Drop is currently one of New Zealand’s favourite bands; their new album Based on a True Story debuted at #1 and stayed there for, well, a long time. My FFD picks: Hope and Wandering Eye.
Goldenhorse is one of my favourite bands and has been since debut album Riverhead. They have this fantastic sound that’s really distinctive for modern pop bands, a good way with melody and their lead Kirstin Morelle has a truly amazing voice. Their best known track is of course Maybe Tomorrow; less well-known, from their second album, Out of the Moon, I like the title track and Don’t Wake Me Up. (Actually, picking just three songs was hard; Golden Dawn, Baby’s Been Bad, Out Tonight, Alien, Run Run Run and Cool Pants are also favourites. Bah, buy the albums!)
When I ripped Strawpeople: the best of 1990-2000 the genre that showed up in WMP was “funky torchpop.” WMP has a lot of odd genres, including “porn groove” and “twee” (True! Dido and Vienna Teng respectively.) but for “funky torchpop” to be the preloaded genre… that’s awesome. But not as awesome as Strawpeople. Drive (feat Bic Runga but not a version of the Bic song) is a truly truly awesome track; so are Boxers Boxers, Trick With a Knife feat. Fiona McDonald and Love Explodes feat. Stephanie Tauevihi.
Lucid 3 are newish and awesome; I love Trophy and Smooth Machine, as well as Something Incestuous.
That’s all for today; I may or may not do this again later this month, but if I did it would be Pasifika artists and probably some good old classics of Kiwi Rock ‘n’ Roll.
