Oct. 26th, 2006 11:17 amToday I was burning SPN to disc for a friend, and I realised that somehow I managed to delete In My Time of Dying. Yeah, I don't know how I managed that either, but anyway, I went to go download a new copy, and most of the links were private servers and I had a download manager I wanted to try out. Apparently managers can't be used for free hosting services, something to do with not allowing pause/restart.
Anyway, my point? Download managers are amazing, it seriously is only taking about half an hour where normally it would take three hours.
So I think almost everyone noticed how Gordon from SPN2x04 had some startling similarities to Gunn, right? Right. And then the second episode of Torchwood really reminded me of "Lonely Hearts", so I guess it was the week for being reminded of Angel. Of course the similarities between Torchwood and Angel are pretty obvious - spin off show intended to be darker than the original, main character an ambiguously sexy older immortal guy with great taste in coats, etc. And Lonely Hearts and Day One are both the second episode and so they have some of the same structural function, were both supposed to serve the same purpose - establish that this is a darker show, establish that this is a sexier show, establish that this is a more adult show, and so on. And obviously they're good and successful at that. Anyway, I find that I want to be less bitchy about Torchwood ripping off Angel than SPN ripping off Angel, and I was wondering why, and I think it's two reasons: one, RTD is a Joss fan and although Kripke might be I actually get the feeling he's a bit disparaging of it, which pisses me off; and I don't wanna be That Fangirl, the one who can't deal with anyone who doesn't like the Jossverse because plenty of people don't and that's fine. But I think you either get to be disparaging and then not use a cheap knockoff of Gunn (who is less interesting and more one-dimensional than the original) or not be disparaging and use a cheap knockoff, not both.
And two, on Torchwood I'm pretty sure it was a conscious homage, whereas on SPN I feel like it was just the mistake of someone who wasn't aware that they were covering already-covered territory. Also, Gunn was a fuckload cooler than Gordon.
Anyway, so this week's Heroes, "Hiros", was totally awesome; the previews from the marathon were SO fucking exciting, and I really think they're living up to them. Some thoughts:
- obviously Isaac can do his vision thing without the drugs (surprise, surprise). It's a shame Peter can actually paint, because otherwise it's pretty much... you know, Isaac, we don't really need you to do anything, just stand in the corner and look crazy while Peter does all the work, because he's wealthy and not a drug addict and everyone likes him more because he doesn't act crazy. You know? I was hoping it'd be all stick figures. Anyway.
- the effect they used on the big painting, with it mostly being black and white and then a big pool of blood... where have I seen that before? It looks incredibly familiar.
- Question of the week: how evil is Evil!Daddy? I am undecided, so I might start calling him Evil?Daddy.
- Hiro was an unbelievable joy this week. <3 And so was Nathan! I'm amazed, he was really cool. (And omg FLYING. Like Sooperman, only in pajamas instead of underwear. Clearly, though, the pjs were made by Ma Kent, on account of their super non shreddable properties. )
- I feel really sorry for DL. :( I hope Niki takes him back, I really want them to stay together and be happy.
- How cute were Matt and his wife? I also really hope they stay together, it's nice to see a couple have marital problems and work through them and stay married rather than, you know, OMG we're fighting, WE MUST GET DIVORCED NOW KTHXBI. If a couple is in therapy, obviously at least someone in the marriage loves the other person enough to want to try to save the relationship. On the other hand, I think he could have been a bit less obvious with the whole reading-your-mind thing, because eventually he's going to have to tell her and she is going to be SO pissed he's been lying to her.
- Isaac continues to be more likeable, what with the whole "Do I sound like that? No wonder she dumped me." HEE. And also, so true, I would have dropped his junkie ass LONG ago.
- Niki's angst doesn't really interest me all that much? So.
- I miss Mohinder! I hope he gets lots of screentime next ep.
- I wonder if Micah knows about ikiN?
- on Evil?Daddy's dealings with Dickhead... I wonder if, when he hollows people's memories away, he tells himself that all he's doing is removing the unnecessary traumatic memories of being kidnapped? Rather than acknowledging that it's just a startlingly unethical way of preserving his secrecy. Also, I didn't mention it last week, but if an organisation doesn't have initials, it obviously doesn't have a name, which is always frustrating to talk about.
