A terrible thing happened to me yesterday. Last week I bought an emergency book in town (I'd finished the one I was reading, had nothing to read at lunch and then on bus home - I'm sure you understand how this constitutes an emergency.) The book was Shadow Gate, by Kate Elliott; my first Elliott book. It seemed to be a stand-alone novel; there was no "Part 2 of 20" on the cover or the other usual signals that a book is part of a series. I was very much enjoying the book when I realised that I was nearly done and no resolution was in sight. Quite exciting! It's always nice to realise that you're going to get a whole extra book, so I went into Unity Books to see if the sequel was out. It's not - but there was a prequel on the shelves. D: D: D: D: GODDAMNIT. If I'd known I could have read the first one and saved the second one for the plane - well, I would have. Homg. :( Is her other series good? I believe I have heard good things, consensus?

In other news: newspaper today: FIVE PAGES back to back on David Bain; one tiny article on Richard Worth buried half below the fold, in the centre of the paper. Approximately the same length as an article which told us that apparently the fourth most risky google search in New Zealand is the question "who is the minister of education" which is, admittedly! Hilarious! Because Anne Tolley is ghastly! Ghastly! Ghastly! BUT PERHAPS THIS IS NOT QUITE AS DESERVING OF WORDS AS A MINISTER WHO HAS RESIGNED BECAUSE HE IS UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT*. ALSO, THE BAIN FAMILY DIED FIFTEEN FUCKING YEARS AGO, PLS TO STOP DRAGGING THEIR DEAD BODIES UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC. It's like, OK, he's not guilty - can't we shut the fuck up about it now that the verdict is out?

*probably. afaik it has only been confirmed that he is being investigated for "something sexual", and he had already been accused a month ago of sexually harassing a different young woman. For all I know it could go as high as sexual assault or rape.

Today I kicked a young man out of the shop where I worked because he was verbally harassing a couple of young women. When I confronted him, he first claimed to know the women, then insisted it was just a laugh. I told him it wasn't a laugh, refused him service, as is my right (I like to disincentivise sexism: I mean, I don't refuse service to all the old men who call me honey, I am pretty tolerant or I couldn't keep my job, but I don't believe in tolerating harassment of freakin' customers), and got him to leave the shop because he was drunk (then he went over and swore at my co-worker for awhile until he saw me coming - this is kind of hilarious because my co-worker is an ex-gang member with a recent criminal conviction and I am a weak Pakeha 21yo, but boy am I a lot meaner than him.) He had a friend with him, who I did serve, and who I asked not to tolerate his friend's behaviour. (Got no response or even an apology out of him, but whatevs.) But this is the issue: we tolerate the behaviour of this young man because he's drunk and it's just a laugh (although the young women did not find it funny, they found it threatening and intimidating, but hey, who cares what they think, they just don't have a sense of humour, right?) but 20 years from now he's going to turn into Richard Worth. Let's stop electing these guys to Parliament (and, hey, serving them alcohol) and let's stop tolerating them and letting our brothers and friends tolerate them.

ETA: OMG, can't believe I almost forgot this! Today my mother finished her final piece of work for her MSc in Astrophysics. It was a really fascinating paper on xenobiology and xenogeology (the physics bit) and seriously, she is SO CLEVER, I am so proud of her, and if you happen to know my mother please email her and let her know you're proud of her too? Comment for the email address if you need it.

Good job with the badly behaved guy. It seems to be all too rare that people in retail actually stand up to the customer, so thank you for not accepting shitty behaviour.

(I'll see you tomorrow!)

*nods* My sister is a nut about Elliott's Crown of Stars series. Quite funny, actually, since she mocks me for fandom.

I've enjoyed quite a lot of Elliot's work, I'd recommend going to the library and looking up her back collection. I'm not crazy-wild about it, but she's a good read.

I meant to say -- thanks for the warning. We eschewed the paper over brunch, for once. :-P

And go you for standing up to dickheads!
