In the continuing-ish saga of my mother finding out that TV can actually be an amazing thing, awhile ago my mother watched the first season of Veronica Mars, which she enjoyed. Then I bought the whole series. Since then she watched through the whole series and came and said 'So when can I get season 4?' She was actually sort of devastated when I told her it had been cancelled, and then watched the whole thing again from the beginning. (My mother has previously displayed similar obsessive behaviour towards Outrageous Fortune and has also enjoyed, in my company, Firefly and Buffy. IIRC she was so-so on Angel.)

I tell you all this so you can get context for the following email:

I ahve just bought this vid –if you are very good tyou can come round and wat h it with me

found a nice girl at JBs who likes the same stuff as us. She recommended moonlight and also Joseph someone’s Doll... something. God i really ahve to do mysomethng about my memory! Typos hers, not mine

I am pretty freaking proud that I managed to get Joss Whedon's Dollhouse out of Joseph Someone's Doll... Something, y'all (but I want to know who this woman is who thinks Moonlight was worth anyone's time. OTOH, my mother did think Logan was really hot, so she'll probably suck her in.)

Anyway, on that note, can anyone recommend some TV that I can recommend to my mother in order to quell her disappointment when she finds out that Moonlight and Dollhouse together will only add up to, what, 39 episodes? Stuff I've watched, stuff I haven't watched, it's all good. I think I might try her on Party Down (she thought the dude who played Dick was amazing, for some reason) and the Dresden Files, which I have somewhere around here... SUCH a shame Rob Thomas didn't end up doing that US adaptation of Outrageous, because that would have been like the perfect whatever.

I'm slightly frightened that I did, considering I've never seen so much as thirty seconds of the show, and it exists on the periphery of my LiveJournal awareness.

Haha! I don't know, I looked at it for like... a full ten minutes thinking 'no way this girl at JBhifi knows more about VMars related TV than I do.'

You know, it's actually probably my general obliviousness that accounts for my making that jump in the middle of reading your post. My thought process was along the lines of "Doll-something, TV show, must be Dollhouse." While I am aware of the theoretical possibility of other shows with the word "doll" in the name, there simply weren't enough actual titles floating around my head to compete much.

Maybe! That would make me feel less like a pop culture ignoramus. :P

In the vein of Buffy and Dresden Files, I'd recommend Wolf Lake, which was short lived but a lot of fun, I thought. And maybe The Vampire Diaries. Pushing Daisies is lovely, charming fun. Dead Like Me is quirky and sarcastic.

DEAD LIKE ME oh, how did I not think of Dead Like Me? I bet she'd like Wonderfalls as well. Brilliant!

Never heard of Wolf Lake. *puts it on own list*

Do you require intellectual TV shows? Because Leverage is awesome, but you know... incredibly, horrendously cheesy.

Haha, no, I think she'd like Leverage! And she'd be excited to learn that it was actually like, still airing, as well.

OH YOUR ICON. It's so YOU.

Did you... know me, when I wrote LOL POOP? I could swear it was in the Starmart era...

Aha! I will take this opportunity to plug Blood Ties, which is the most awesome supernatural detective show, although sadly only 22 episodes. Also smart and feminist with loads of UST. The first episode is crappy but it gets loads better fast.

My mother certainly liked it ;)

Burn Notice is 80's tv the way it should have been, cheesy, fun and informative with fantastic captions...and it has Bruce Campbell and his chin, also Fiona who likes blowing things up (I'm a total sucker for destructive women). It's up to 3 seasons and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

Middleman is only 13 episodes long but they are glorious and wonderful and have zombie trout and vampire puppets and a deep and resounding respect for the Bechdel test.

Oh and if you haven't watched The Wire then you will probably spend the rest of your life dodging people zealously reccing it because it really is just that good.

I do that with Outrageous on a rotating basis. I spend a few weeks indulging in weekend-long fits of the West Wing, and the next few with the few seasons of Outrageous I have.

I'm a bit sad about the Rob Thomas version of Outrageous, but that pilot idea sat around for years and was only ever cast, but not filmed. They tried again, though, and Scoundrels was picked up for a run, and is actually getting put to cellulose. IMHO, actual filming wins.

Can't decide if I'm excited or not, though. Guess we'll see when it comes out this summer?

Also, have you thought of Big Love? Really, really ridiculously amazing, but it's not for everybody. One of my flatties peaces out every time it's on, she's so offended by polygamy.

Otherwise, there's always Psych or Fringe. Both lovely, both still on, both massive forms of win.
