*revelation* Ah-hah! Americans do have Boxing Day! They just call it Black Friday and shift it to after Thanksgiving. I just knew no developed nation could be content without a holiday appointed solely for the torture of people working in retail.

In other news, wireless crapped out on us a few days ago!!! argh, so I am not really around much - skimming the flist whenever I can, but that's it really. :-/

So that's what Boxing Day is. Honestly, no one in my family had any idea at all, I used to ask every year when I saw it on the calendar. I always thought it meant something like the day that everyone put all the stuff they got for Christmas away and cleaned and stuff like that. Apparently mom thought it was like Superbowl Sunday only for boxing instead of football... :P

Anyway, I explained it to my mom earlier; she says it makes no sense whatsoever having a day like Black Friday after Christmas, because you're supposed to be going out and getting things for people- the beginning of the holiday shopping season and all that. I dunno.

No, you're going out and spending your gift money/vouchers. And the shops are getting rid of whatever excess stock they had. And whatever stuff they got in for all the sales. And returning the gifts you don't want for credit on something you do want.

It's the perfect way to get rid of all the crap that grandma gave you and get something cool!

My mum, sisters and ex once took me shopping on Boxing Day from 8.30am til about 6pm. I was a grouchy boy.

Those of us not so shopping minded usually spend Boxing Day sunbathing and polishing off the left-overs from Christmas, and mucking around with our presents. It's also the traditional day to visit family and friends if you had a nuclear-family-only Christmas Day (sharing that function with Christmas afternoon.) Associated with cricket, too; there are usually test matches starting on Boxing Day. Bit of a multi-purpose holiday, really.
