God, my jobs have WORST TIMING EVER. Just as Subway is getting its a into g, monique from Starmart offers me full-time work. Subway technically offered first. OTOH, Subway already screwed me once, and Monique's been awesome, getting me as much casual work as she can; Subway want me to work pretty much seven days a week at stupid, shifting-roster hours, Monique's giving me six days a week on regular hours; and, well, Subway's paying me 11.25/hr and Monique's paying me 12.75/hr, which is freaking AWESOME pay for a summer job (min. wage here is 11.25). So I think I have to tell Subway. But, ugh: SO HARD. :-/ I feel really bad and mean! Someone tell me I'm not being a shit to them.

You're not doing anything wrong. Starmart are offering better pay, better hours, better everything. You aren't obliged until you've signed something, and as for being somehow morally obliged to Subway... in my mind, there's no such thing as a moral obligation in an employer-employee relationship.

Oh, you're definitely not. This is the capitalist venture; it's the way it's supposed to work! ;-) They are upholding their end of capitalism, and now it's your duty be just as bloody-minded capitalistic. *cough* And really, I wouldn't trust Subway as far as I could throw them, if I were in your situation....

If you really want to work for Subway badly (though that's not the impression I'm getting), you could try to negotiate the wage up and then just cut your losses on how nice the people are...

It always sickens me the way employers - almost all of them - when talking about their obligations to the employee, talk about legality, contract and profit, and when talking about their employee's obligations to them, emphasis loyalty, duty, and gratitude.

You are not being bad, mean, or fecal to receive two job offers and accept the second.

Unless you have made a commitment to Subway--as in, already had them schedule you--then it's just that, an offer. That's all. They are not depending on you. They are not going to be injured or sad because a potential minimum wage summer employee got a different job. They will hire someone else or give more hours to the people they've got.

Meanwhile, you will be taking an opportunity with better pay, hours, people, and treatment.

Whether or not they've scheduled her, if she hasn't signed anything, there's no obligation of any kind. And with no contract yet, I wouldn't put it past them to screw around some more.

I wouldn't trust them either, no. But I could understand her wanting to honor an oral commitment if she'd made one, and if it were going to cause problems for other individuals (who were not responsible for the earlier stupidity). As far as the employer itself, they obviously don't deserve reliable employees. :P

You are not being a jerk! You are thinking like someone on the job market who is reasonably analyzing that market. :) No shame for you!

Take the Starmart job - I agree with what everyone else is saying!

You're not being mean. You have to think about what's best for you.

One pays better.

That's all you really need to know. Money for a cash-strapped student is very important. It keeps you from eating a cucumber for supper because you ran out of food.

Besides, Subway treated you like shit; go with the one that actually cares if you're going to work for them or not.
