dear livejournal,

much has happened since we spoke last!

Now that I am working full-time at starmart, I once again have the opportunity to be enraged by the headlines. On Wednesday, I couldn't decide which one was more offensive: "the Dominion Post takes a stand against whaling!!11!" or "freedom-of-speech limiting bill passed." For the record, I don't approve of whaling, but I also don't approve of newspapers that aren't even faking neutrality anymore; I do approve of the electoral finance bill, and the New Zealand Herald really pissed me off; additionally, I think in terms of self-serving politics, this bill serves the Greens and the Maori party about 600% more than it serves Labour. Not all Labour supporters are starving welfare recipients, morons.

Other things that enrage me include my co-worker, Ramsin, who will be voting in the next election but doesn't understand MMP (and won't listen to explanations); customers who don't listen to me or who fail to treat me with basic human dignity; and the fact that I need three fillings (and all the dentists I've seen have told me my gums will stop bleeding if I brush regularly. NO. THEY WON'T. My gums have been my gums for a very long time, trust me on this.)

On the other hand, there are many things in my life that don't piss me off. for example! I have Christmas Eve off, which means I will actually have a chance to do some Christmas shopping - this is INCREDIBLE - I also have christmas eve eve off, so two whole days, an embarassment of riches. I finished my yuletide story and decided it wasn't as awful as I thought it was when I started writing it, which is great. My younger brother turned 17, which is pretty much !; I got him Farscape Season 1 (um, well, he told me to buy it and I bought it off my sister, who was going to give it to me for Christmas, when I couldn't find a copy because I left it so late to shop) and the Stephen Colbert book on CD that I downloaded. Speaking of which, this is my new stocking-stuffer for my family (I tend to go with one boringly obvious thing I know they'll like, and one quirky, cheap stocking stuffer which is the same but different to go with each; last year it was a second-hand book, tailored to individual preference, this year I think audiobooks.)

Hmm. Fannishly, not much is moving me at the moment - I'm watching a lot of farscape and really enjoying it, but I can get my rocks off talking about it with people I know IRL. Um... lately I've discovered a growing intolerance for spending time with people who don't watch a lot of television - Whedon, Stargate, Farscape, SPN, SV, I don't really care: it's the fannish interest/drive I'm talking about. It's funny because on the one hand, I'm passionate about lots of stuff and I like to talk, but on the other hand, I'm just sick of talking about the weather/politics/uni (the next person I barely know who asks me about whether I'm finished yet is getting smacked; more about uni in some post next year, I think.) But the fannish stuff - conversing about fannish stuff is just fun, no pressure, never boring, always entertaining, and it's just as revealing in terms of personal taste and opinions and politics. *sigh* Why can't we all be fans, huh, huh?

The 'Dominion Post takes a stand againt whaling' thing got to me too. Not so much because I think neutrality is the key - I've been reading a lot of Umberto Eco on this topic recently - or because I support whaling, but because this sort of 'campaign' is both xenophobic (it's very much an Us vs Japan thing) and ineffective. If the Dom was really taking a stand against whaling it'd be refusing to carry advertising from companies linked to Japanese whaling interests, not delivering letters to the Japanese vice consul and then taking photos of him looking confused. It almost seems like they'd rather be running a reality TV show than a newspaper.

Exactly! It's just, it's crazy.

In re: the us vs japan thing, I really like the stickers that have been up around the place - I <3 sushi/origami/manga, but whaling breaks my heart. It's way more empathetic.

Hahaha, it's times when I'm on break from school that I miss being able to talk fandomy things with my roommate. I fill the void by watching Batman cartoons with my brother.

Yeah, I mean, during schooltime I pretty much only talk to people who know about this stuff, or people who are at uni themselves (and therefore 700% less likely to ask me about university, which is quickly becoming my least favourite topic of conversation EVER.) Here, I still have heaps of people I can talk to about it, but I also have loooots of interactions with people who haven't got a clue, and it makes me stressed!!!

In other news: FARSCAPE!!!
I never got to see enough of that show. Awesome. One where he gets home? Wicked, but I don't know if you've seen it so I shall say no more...
