My week: so busy.
MONDAY: First day of classes! Also, organise self and cast of thousands for Clubs Day, including posters, planning, rosters, ability to be between one and three places at once, etc. Compounded by the problem that I'm supposed to be recruiting for two different clubs - a SF&F fanclub and the choir. They don't exactly have a lot in common. Have the big important start-of-year flat meeting. Spend ONE HOUR doing rubbish and recycling left by previous tenants, oh my god.
TUESDAY: First skipped class of the year, a record! Rise early to get set up for Clubs Day so I can go away at 10. Am straight-up blessed by Herself, in the form of a zillion people who are happy to sit around at tables for my clubs while I go off and do other things like doctor's appointments. Am officially declared ITP-free and discharged back to my GP: calloo callay! :D Enjoy charming sun and charming company at Clubs Day. Have another two hours of class. Realise am already behind on reading; thank you, Phil, for expecting 15 hours of reading a week. Do the big important First Flat Shop.
WEDNESDAY: Get up even earlier to set up for Clubs Day so I can ditch the heroic
xorande while I go off to meet up with
allasomething and her boyfriend. This was super-awesome and, side note, I feel really lucky to have met two YW forum alumnae (I met
chattycheese in Wellington) in the past few weeks. They are both just awesome and cause me to twirl. Anyway, after seeing them off I head back to rescue Cass and sort important things. Have the big pre-AGM chat with Amanda (from choir) and then have an extremely small AGM (us and three, maybe four other people?) in which we nevertheless plan a rehearsal the next day. Also, we conscript an ickle firstie, Leanne, for the committee \o/ In the evening, I head out to the 24-hour occupation to protest the change-of-arts proposal at the uni.
THURSDAY: Class! Class ALL DAY, broken by lunch with Lucy and Tas. Also ameliorated by the fact that one class opened with the "Thriller" music video and closed with an episode of The X-Files. Then a couple of hours in the library with Cass typing up emails for the 133 people who joined on Clubs Day. That's a lot of email. THEN a choir rehearsal.
TODAY (FRIDAY): Sleeping in oh thank god, cleaning my room, doing washing, and vacuum cleaning (I know. My room wasn't even that messy! I feel great.) until it was time for the SF&F club inaugural general meeting. This was a freaking zoo, I have no idea what happened, there were a zillion people there, but it was a tonne of fun. Followed by drinks at the Foundry. A big highlight: Amanda confirming that choir will definitely have an actual trained director this year! So excited. Then headed back to Will's place for Babylon 5, which seemed pretty awesome (hard to tell because there was a lot of blether going on, but it seemed classically awesome - and it had a revolving cylinder, you know, like golden age space stations, Ben Bova and so on. AMAZING. :D)
Then I started to crash so I ditched. But man. I feel like my week's been so productive! :D Except in terms of actual study, but I can't do anything about that till I get my textbooks anyway, so.
ETA: oh yeah. I'm also playing D&D with some friends this term. I won't be the only newbie in the group so it should be non-threatening but... any tips?

Date: 2008-02-29 10:23 am (UTC)Enjoy it :), remember that your character doesn't know everything you do (in character and out of character information), if you're not sure what you're doing then play a clueless character (the comic relief is usually quite good for that) and everyone seems to thing that halflings aren't dangerous. With a sling shot they can be deadly and you can make a slingshot fairly easily :)

Date: 2008-02-29 11:59 am (UTC)Check whether the rest of the players are RolePlayers or Gamers. The mix can be infuriating.
Look up and read "DM of the Rings" and "Darths and Droids" to get an idea of the sorts of ways games go.
Let me play if I'm ever in Christchurch....

Date: 2008-02-29 04:41 pm (UTC)It's SLOW. Depending on who you play with, the game is monstrously, monstrously slow. As in, have lots of caffeine nearby, in slower parts you'll need it to stay awake . . .
I'm sure your friends realize you're new and will let you monopolize the Player's Handbook. You'll need that, especially if you play as a sorceror or wizard. Are you starting from the beginning, like Level 1? If not, have a look into prestige classes . . .
I've always played with gamers rather than roleplayers though. Acting as your character gets into dangerous LARP-ing territory. At least for me. o.O

Date: 2008-02-29 10:22 pm (UTC)1) Don't feel bad about asking questions - but try and ask them outside of the game - before it starts or after it ends, or between sessions. Questions mid-game would be like SG1 suddenly having a five minute debate involving the script writers about the reality of the physics involved in a solution suggested by Sam.
2) Have your own set of dice at the table (if need be, see if you can borrow other peoples - I often loan a few dice to those who've forgotten their dice). NB: Some people are possessive about their dice.
3) Realise that different people play roleplaying games in different ways. Some people like to 'be the character', others want to tell a story, some are just there for the company and others just want to kick in the door, knock out the orc and take the orc's pie.
4) Have Fun. If you're not having fun, discuss it with the group.
