So, I've been getting most of my bitching-about-my-life yayas out in lengthy emails to four lucky ladies who live in Wellington - my mother and three very old friends - so you guys have been spared (crowd goes wild!) But now I feel like I haven't had a lot of communication with y'all lately. This could be solved by commenting more in other people's posts, but... too hard basket! I suck as a person. Instead, you can have a meme, and some thoughts on the latest few episodes of SGA. Also, why not, let's do the ask-me-anything you think you should know about me, but don't meme.

Meme principle: answer the damn questions. Change one question you don't want to answer.

1. You have 50 dollars in your pocket. What do you do with it?
Buy books, probably, or chocolate. Probably books. Actually, let's go with buying textbooks, because I still haven't done that.

2. Your ultimate OTP? (fandom or real life)
Ever ever? Probably Tom/Carl. Perfect fluffy mix of domesticity, buddyslash, and fighting crime entropy. But I have jived really well (in the sense that I still feel an emotional connection - I've read a lot of Clark/Lex but it's not on this list) with Nita/Kit, Remus/Sirius, Sam/Dean, Jared/Jensen, Ron/Hermione, Sam/Jack, Briar/Tris (SO underwritten, but otherwise a very very close second in terms of ultimate OTPS) and am currently very into McKay/Sheppard, which has a lot to reccomend it in terms of fiction. Favourite underwritten OTP: You know Susan Cooper, who wrote the Dark is Rising sequence? Yeah, you do. OK, she wrote - actually, a whole lot of other books, but I'm thinking particularly of this cute little duology, the Boggart books. You probably haven't read them. But if you had: oh my god, Tommy/Emily, WHY ISN'T THERE ANY?

3. Uhhhhh... who is one person you want to meet who you haven't already met (living!) What's your least favourite kind of joke?
I'm so glad I got to change this question! My least favourite kind of joke is the jokes people make when being introduced to people who have unusual names, guess why?

4. Are you confused as to what lies ahead of you?
Very. I have no idea what I want to do, where I want to go, how many freakin' kids I want to have, when, where, blah blah OH MY GOD THE FUTURE :( :( :(

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I don't. Didn't I just say that in the last question? I guess I'd like to have graduated, maybe have my Masters, hopefully be overseas and earning some money.

6. If you could choose to cancel one TV show in order to un-cancel another show which shows would you choose and why?
SO EASY. Cancel Survivor, renew Firefly. I despise nothing as much as I despise Survivor and its clones.

7. If the person you like does not accept you, would you continue to wait for them to change their feelings?
Historically I have, which I maintain is a stupid position because feelings don't actually change like that. Once you've put someone into the just-friends basket you can't take them out again. But I know myself well enough to know that I hang onto crushes like whoa and there's not much you can do about that but wait for it to pass.

8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?
Be as nice as possible to the person they're dating, because I'm terrified of being the jealous other person. Ugh. I've only failed at this once, and that was bound up in layers and layers of different emotions and jealousies and personal inadequacies, so I think it's not a bad record.

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy recently?
Plenty of things. Let that be a lesson to you not to ask closed questions.

10. What do you want most in life?
Nothing specific. Stimulation, entertainment, rewarding career, affection, all that stuff.

11. Which of the 7 Deadly Sins do you think you relate to the most & why?
Procrastination is one, right?

12. If you find out that your best friend is going out with your boyfriend/girlfriend, how would you react?
I'm going to go ahead and assume this is ex boyfriend or girlfriend. In which case I'd probably be upset, but friends are more important than hurt feelings about exes, honestly.

13. Who is currently the most important person to you?
In the overly-dependent way? Definitely Meg.

14. What kind of person do you think you are?
I try to see the best in people and respond to that but I get easily irritated and can be a real bitch. Similarly I try to be generous with my time and energy but I'm not very good at that either. I think I can be a good listener. I depend a lot on affirmation of my intelligence/worth/attraction by others. I'm opinionated, which I got slammed for a lot in high school and really tried to amend, and which now I feel like I've lost. I don't know. I guess I try to make myself better and sometimes I succeed, is the kind of person I am.

15. Do you believe there is nothing higher than human kind?
Giraffes are higher than human kind. So's Everest. I don't understand the question! Do I think there's a higher power? No way. Do I think there are more important things than the survival of the human race? Sure, but I don't believe humans should behave as if there were (I mean, I don't think we should sit around and die because of our affect on the environment, although we should amend our behaviour in that sense.) Do I believe there are, for example, aliens more technically advanced? Somewhere between possibly and probably. Do I believe humanity should strive to better itself? Sort of.

16. Which fictional character could you most see yourself marrying?
Dairine Callahan. In like, ten of her years, obviously.

17. Would you give your all in a relationship?
Depends! Right now, probably not, I'm not exactly lookng for a permanent committment and I'm moving away at the end of the year anyway...

18. Do you have a motto? If yes which one?
No.

19. What type of friends do you like?
People who are passionate about something - anything, fandom or politics or science or literature. (If it's politics, though, we should probably broadly agree or we won't ever get along.) People who are articulate.

20. Do you have an all time favorite song?
Nope. I go through kicks of loving one song or artist. Right now I'm really digging Joni Mitchell; Cactus Tree is my favourite, I also really like River and All I Want.

OK so let's start with The Last Man. I was so awesomed by this episode that I watched it twice in twelve hours and went for about a day without wanting to read anything negative about it AT ALL. That was great, and I still love it, but I can take a few steps back now and admit: what they did with Teyla was really, truly, unpleasant and creepy. Someone compared it to her being thrown away like a wrapper, and the simile is unpleasantly apt. I did not like it at all, and while we're at it, it was indeed creepy to see Keller killed just to give Rodney motivation (I mean, I appreciate that they killed "everyone", but Rodney, Lorne, possibly Zelenka all got out alive...) I thought Ronon and Todd's deaths were excellent and nicely opposed to Sam's death.

Sam's death made me tear up, and at a different time of the month I would have been bawling: that was as affecting as her death in... I think it's There But For the Grace of God, but that SG-1 episode where she blows herself up? Right. I liked that and I liked this. She looked scared and brave and wow, Amanda Tapping does brilliant work when she's been as well-rested as this season has let her be. But bluntly, what the whole episode, Sam-wise (hee, Samwise), pointed out to me was that I'm glad she's leaving the show. I love Sam, I love her a whole hell of a lot, and I feel like in this season we've seen her maybe twice. We saw a lot of her in this episode, but they had to take away both John and Rodney and remove her command of, you know, Atlantis to see what is, to me, the real Sam Carter. (And it's not like it was about being in command: she was still in command of the Phoenix! And see, Rodney and Sam can work together without undercutting either of them as characters.) So I'm glad she's leaving before Sam-on-Atlantis overwrites Sam-in-my-head, who is several degrees cooler.

In a broad plot sense - OK, I'm frustrated that Michael has to be that damn evil. You know what would be interesting? If the Wraith with the only potential non-genocidal solution to the whole unresolvable issue wasn't a genocidal maniac! Because the thing is his retrovirus would allow the Wraith and the humans to co-exist! Way to avoid any actual thinky thought, writers. Nevertheless, it was fun to interact with other parts of the Pegasus galaxy and I really enjoyed meeting different peoples (and I yayed out loud when Halling showed up. Where was Jinto? I forget if we saw him.) I'm pretty annoyed by the hints we've had that they intend Teyla to leave SGA-1 after the birth of her baby though. Argh. I'll be honest, I've always preferred Teyla in fic to Teyla on the show, but - this seems really wrong for her, and I think I'll miss her more than I might have thought.

OK, go nuts, ask questions and whatnot.

"4. Are you confused as to what lies ahead of you?

I'm told I'm not allowed to have kids because I would wreck their lives. By naming them really weird things like "Horatio" and other really odd things. xD.

Oh, I want to give my kids unusual names - my whole family has unusual names and we like it, it hasn't ruined our lives at all. I wouldn't worry about it. :)

"All I Want" is definitely a Joni fav. I also like "Party People" and "Willie" and "I Had A King".

Dairine? *amused* Not that I don't love her, but I must have come to the series too late, because she definitely always struck me as the annoying-younger-sister type. A kick-ass younger sister, but still. XD

I must have been 13 or 14 when I read High Wizardry the first time (only the first two were at my local library) -- so, totally random question for you -- how old were you when you really got into YW?

it's funny, because for awhile I did have that very reaction to Dairine. But then, I don't know, she sort of reminds me of several people in my real life who I straight-up adore and she's cute and clever. And I really love that she's supposed to be graceful. I love the idea of holding "graceful" in my head at the same time as "Yoda pyjamas" and "cheats at poker." I don't know. I had a strange reversal!

Hmm, good question. Do you know, I have no idea? I remember that Wizard's Holiday wasn't out yet, even in the States; in fact, IIRC the last book I read before I had to start waiting was Dilemma. Checking publication dates that makes it a definitive "sometime between 2001 and 2002", but I'm pretty sure I'd read some of the earlier books, slightly earlier (because my school library had High Wizardry and So You Want To Be a Wizard. Hmm, maybe even DW. I definitely read HW before I read DW, which sort of ruined the suspense!!) Uhm... I joined the forums at yw.com (back then it was... youngwizards.net/forums/ubb.x? Maybe? God, I used to know like five of the URLs off by heart. ) Anyway, I joined the forums in September '02, so I would have been 15; I might have read HW a year or more earlier. Wow, that was a long way of figuring it out, but yeah, I was probably around 14 or so.

Hey there, so i was just clicking around Lj and some how i ended up at you, I was looking for other people who live in christchurch that are interested in stargate. Well juding by your post and review of last man, i have found someone, and not only that a possible Sam Fan?

Well you totally said what kinda how i feel about Sam on Atlantis, i mean i was so over the moon when they said she would be crossing over onto it, because i mean Sam is an amazing character but they have really underutilised her and its been rather depressing this season, I mean so many times i have thought "And this would be wear they defer to the leader of the base.." I dunno but we got a couple of good/interesting scenes. I just hope that the way they write her out is fitting of Sam.

I totally had tears in my eyes in last man when she flew into the ships, it was just so sad, it affected me more than any of the other characters, so i definately know that she is still my fav character and holy crap blah blah blah and i haven't even introduced myself.

My name is Amanda, i live in Chch too, i'm 22, studying early childhood, huge stargate/atlantis/bsg fan.
Hope you don't mind me posting i was just so excited to find someone else in chch who likes sg. anywho i'll stop babbling now. Take care.
