I'm writing an essay about the Buffy episode "Doppelgangland." It's about gender. Synonyms for "provocative" and "sexualised", flist?

The essay's actually going really badly. God knows why: it's about how "images and understandings of gender (femininity or masculinity) affect the representation of monstrosity or the abject." So it should be easy as pie - Evil Willow's slutting it up all over the screen. But, argh, there must be more to say - I can't make that take up 3,500 words, and I kinda don't want to. How come all the Buffy scholarship is on Buffy, not Willow? Anyway - this is all by way of asking, if anyone knows any good spots for Buffy meta, especially episodic Buffy meta or Buffy gender meta witrh a focus on pre-Tara Willow, I'd love a tip.

Yeah, that one's getting a good workout, too.

I am assuming you have already checked out Sex and the Slayer? I don't remember whether it has a section on Willow, but yeah...that's pretty much THE work on Buffy gender studies.
There's the bit at the end where Angel implies that personality carries over into vampire-form, and you could say something about repression and vampirism as a symbol for liberation gone wrong, warning against excess. And the way evil! Will is pretty much constantly hitting on good! Will, something about self-love. Also, both Willows somewhat embody the Madonna/whore dichotomy. Or maybe they embody two parts of the Platonic triumvirate soul, body and mind, with spirit somewhere else or absent.
Don't take anything I say too seriously. It's 2:30am here.

Ugh, unfortunately sex and the slayer was out of the library and will be until well after the essay's due. the prof should really have put it on 3-hour loan, but... nope, of course she didn't. SIGH.

No, some of what you said is interesting and reflects plenty of what I said in the essay, so hopefully you're not crazy, because if you are, um, I am too.

Why are all your icons so damn hot?

Alas! That's pretty much my Buffy gender studies bible. Damn good read, too. What class is this for, anyway?
It is really, really hard to judge what makes sense and what is Dr. Hobo (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=76) stuff when I'm half asleep. XD
And my icons are pure awesome because I am pure awesome. Also because I snag most of them from my super-talented sister, [livejournal.com profile] oravannahka.

Can you incorporate The Wish? I seem to recall vampire!Xander staying relatively sexually normal....? Scary, yes, but not all whorey....

I haven't gone into Xander, and probably won't since he doesn't really feature in "Doppelgangland", but I do think your point is interesting. Ultimately, I think I would say that it's a function of two things: 1. Xander is one of the heroes of the show because he specifically does not conform to the manly man stereotype. That's why we like him and it's 100% why Joss likes him: even though Xander sometimes worries that he's failing his duties as a man because he's not all butch, viewers of the show know that Xander's desperately important. Therefore, to imply that Xander's repressing violence, especially sexy sexy violence, is antithetical to everything his character's supposed to stand for and 2. Willow, on the other hand, is *definitely* supposed to be repressing these kinds of desires. See: Season 6.

don't look at me, i'm still trying not to make my whole essay on Supernatural's Hook Man basically anti-church and wholly about the fact Sam is a big girl. XD
