May. 7th, 2008 10:14 pmI have been moved! ... to post about television. whoa, big change there.
I've been finding myself getting behind on BSG and SPN. SPN, not too surprised about, because I pretty much fell out of love with it from the start of the season. Maybe it was time, maybe it was the new and unpleasant characterisation of Dean... well, whatever. I may catch up with it sometime when I'm bored. However, I'm hugely surprised that I'm getting behind on BSG! It's not that I don't want to watch the show - I do. It's that the last five minutes of that episode two weeks ago where that horrible and unfortunate thing happened made me so miserable I'm not sure I want to go on, which is kind of strange because it's not like Callie was ever that important a character. But I always kind of loved her because she guest-starred in one of my favourite episodes of Dark Angel in which she was both adorable and hot and kind of the reason I started watching BSG.
Also I just think her death kind of sucked. According to most of my guy friends the episode made her exremely dislikeable, and while I don't think that's true (because I think that everything Callie goes through in this episode is totally understandable and, in fact, from what we can tell from this Callie's life was actually better on New Caprica which is seriously saying something) I do think there could have been an episode which honoured and remembered Callie as a character a bit more, instead of turning her into this fairly wretched creature who is practically put out of her misery. Also-also, I am really weirded out by the Tori thing. I know Tori is the only one of the final four who we really don't know well at all but, I'm sorry, I can't help but be annoyed that the woman appears to be the only one who's not carrying on working for the fleet/things she believes in, and also, has some weird lust-on for the Chief.
So it's kind of sad but true that out of my top three shows on US television at the moment, two are actually crime shows and only one's SF&F (BSG, which is still amazing. The other two are Bones and Life, shows which are consistently excellent in terms of character continuity, thoughtful casting and scripting, and good acting.) SGA's fun and all, but doesn't meet any of my criteria for a show which I can love by itself - in a vacuum, I don't know if I would like SGA that much. In the context of being in a fandom, OTOH, I couldn't go past SGA (or SPN, truly) and I'm not trying to say that I think SGA is worthless because I would be very very very very sad if it went away (sadder than if Life went away, actually.) This paragraph brought to you by the way I'm falling out of love with a bunch of shows at the moment and my annoyance with my lack of fantasy TV. Also, the fact that I really disapprove of the crime show genre and it annoys me a lot that I dig them so much (and House, too, which is just another kind of crime show and which continues to get me excited to download it. Actually, this week's episode was great, HI CAMERON I DO ADORE YOU.)
Anyway, blah blah blah: this week's episode of Bones was truly truly incredible and I don't really have anything to say to it, for it, about it - but wow, I nearly cried, beautifully played. I look back on David Boreanaz in Buffy S1 and I'm amazed! :PP anyway, imma go re-watch that courtroom scene a couple of times, but first!
Mixed feelings about saga of gay Eric. Eric is adorable and I've always liked him but then I pretty much like everyone on this show - and not in the "I like Chuck, assholes are such fun to watch" way but in the "I like Chuck, he's so misunderstood and just wants Daddy to love him" way, which I kind of hate myself for, but whatever. So I was pleased that Eric gets significant story time again (and I hope he'll keep getting it.) And I'm always a big fan of canon gay. But uh, I was maybe hoping a little bit for Eric/Jenny, so I'm fractionally disappointed, but it's totally made up for by the cuteness of him. (Also, wonder if it was actually the actor standing in front of Asher in the "kiss" scene (I feel cheated. Think Torchwood has spoiled me for the gay smoochies.) but wardrobe should be congratulated because I recognised Eric's pants straight away! They're weirdly distinctive.)
Finally, no way did Serena ever kill anyone. Hah! I laughed at the screen. I don't care how wild she was, it never happened. (Oh! And did I mention how weird it is seeing little Dawnie again? IMO Michelle Trachtenberg is never going to look old enough to play anyone who can legally drink. In the States or NZ. But she's such a cutie-pie! Michelle, not Georgie, who's ghastly!)

Date: 2008-05-07 12:33 pm (UTC)Personally, I always preferred crime-drama over any sort of fantasy show. Somehow, SPN and so on just don't do it for me. House doesn't either . . . I think it has something to do with the science aspect of it. Hodgins freaking GLORIFIES Mineralogy! xDDD What he does is genius, but not impossible; I can identify hand samples and thin sections, and I just finished second-year . . . Of course mineralogy is really not that interesting --'' And Zack is just too much fun as a character. ^^
As for the last episode of Bones, it has definitely got to be one of my favourites. I need to remember to torrent it when I get home today. I especially loved the Clark and Zack interchange ^^.
