Because she's not in love with him, exactly; she's in love with the Great Game, and no one plays it better than Sherlock. I think. I need to watch this a few more times, but the scene with John and Irene was really quite telling to me. Neither of them are attracted to Sherlock in the traditional physical sense, but they keep coming back for his sexy brain, and that translated into physical attraction in certain cicumstances. That was the sense I got, and I was happier with it than I've been with any version of the Irene Adler story in any adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
