Awesome weekend full of fangirls and hockey and movies (and also relatives due to a couple of ill-timed birthdays. Why were you born 60 years ago this week, uncle? Poor decision-making, very poor).

- I had a [personal profile] shihadchick! A rare privilege and delight. :D

- Got to admire [personal profile] hazel and [personal profile] tamarillow's adorable new house! And the storied Pile of Hedge!

- Ate [personal profile] mermaid's amazing brownie!

- Had FEELINGS ABOUT HOCKEY with the abovenamed and [personal profile] owlbeer! Oh, so many feelings about hockey, like boo, Yotes, and yay, Rangers, and YAY, KINGS! I also made C play me an old Blackhawks/Preds game from 2010 which was, uh, it was SUPER FUN to see the Hawks be awesome. *bandwagon fan* [personal profile] owlbeer seemed pretty intensely amused by my fledgling sportsfannishness.

- Somewhere in there I watched half a rugby match (Hurricanes/Chiefs) and it was really interesting in a navel-gazing kind of way. I now know, I would say, approximately equal amounts about rugby and hockey, but in completely different ways. I know a bunch of the rules of hockey, including some common penalties. I know how many players you can have on the ice at any one time and roughly what positions they play. Meanwhile, I know one rule of rugby (no forward passes) (yes, that is literally the only rule I know; I didn't even know how long the halves were [40 minutes apparently and yes I've been to live rugby, thank you]). I guess I know one penalty (head tackles).

On the other hand, I can sit down in front of a rugby match and basically know what's going on. I couldn't tell you specifically what happens when a player gets tackled, but I know what it looks like, I know why a player gets tackled and I know what it looks like after. I also know what an awesome try looks like and I can see when one might be coming. Meanwhile, stick me in front of a hockey game and I can get really excited, but to be honest I just don't know what's happening. I can see the puck moving, I can appreciate a pretty penalty shot or shootout goal or occasionally I'll recognise a really nice pass, but I have no idea of the relative difficulty level of these things - I don't know if it just looks cool or actually is cool.

I have a lot of ignorance about both - I can't see plays being formed, for example, and I can't really tell whether one tea is more skilled than the other except by the scoreboard. But - blargh, I don't know why I find this so interesting but it really is. Erm, to me.

The other thing is that every time I mention to people that I'm watching hockey they say, oh, that's so violent! Which it is. But wow, I watch what happens in some rugby matches and I really wonder.

Here's a fun fact: attendance at that rugby match was apparently over 22,000. I know we're a rugby-mad nation but I am legit shocked that Hamilton can turn out crowds of rugby fans that exceed the maximum capacity of the United Center (the Chicago arena for both ice hockey and basketball). (Wellington, by the way: not so much. Canes matches this year average 12k - impressively, Phoenix matches seem to be around 10k, although with much more variation. No stats for the World Cup matches last year but ABs vs South Africa have been the biggest games over the past few years, around 30-34k which would be pretty much capacity, and twice as much attention as All White games garnered.)

- Caring about sports was affecting my self-image strangely, so luckily there was also fangirl dessert in there with the abovenamed and [personal profile] china_shop and [personal profile] arysteia and also, I am pretty sure, some other people whose LJs I haven't necessarily connected with their faces? But who are really super delightful humans. A pretty enjoyable conversation about hurt/comfort and celebrity heights ensued. (SUPER SAD I missed the Avengers squee though.)

- I'm gonna go read porn and do the dishes now. Blissfully great weekend. &FANGIRLS;
