Nov. 28th, 2004 11:18 pmUm. 'ship meme. Of course, you know it'll all have just the one answer... I mean, I'm a true R/Hr believer but it often seems so obvious I don't bother to actively 'ship it.
Um, so, yes.
One True Pairing 'ship: Remus/Sirius, Ron/Hermione. Lesser extent Harry/Ginny.
One True Threesome 'ship: Don't really read threesome much, I confess... um, I've read and liked trio!smut. And, er, Remus/Sirius/James, but that's my "I'm going to hell already, may as well have fun while I'm doing it" 'ship.
Canon 'ship: Ron/Hermione! Oh, you don't take that? Remus/Sirius, theirloveissocanon... Oh, still no bite? Fine, Arthur/Molly, cuteness basis. :p
"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" 'ship:Remus/Tonks. Sick sick sick.
"You are one sick bastard" 'ship: Snape/anyone. Or, also, McGonagall/Anyone. Sorry, they were just never meant to have sex EVER.
"I dabble a little" 'ship: Hmm, Ginny/Hermione. And random 'ships I read to scare myself. Oh, oh, Dean/Seamus. I love that, it's so cute.
"It's like a car crash" 'ship: Draco/Anyone, harry/Anyone. they are both so emotionally impaired... I don't think they can really commit. Harry maybe later. A lot later.
"Tickles my fancy but not quite sold yet" 'ship: Luna/Cho. I think I'd need quite a specific dynamic for this to convince. And Snape/Tonks, as can be found in
copperbadge's BRILLIANT fic Laocoon's Children. OK, so it's not there yet, but it's SO coming.
"Makes no canon sense but why the hell not" 'ship: Err.... dunno? I guess Luna/Cho. For fun's sakes. :D
"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" 'ship: Draco/Hermione. WTF peoples?
"I love it but nobody else does" 'ship: Hermione/George. Er?
"When all is said and done" 'ship: OMG R/S R/S IT IS THE ONE TRUE WAY PEOPLE
Oh, and there was no category for Theo/Anne. But dudes, Theodore Nott/Blonde shy Huflepuff OC is THE GREATEST EVAH. piano/flute OMG.
In other news, I missed half of Angels in America tonight, ARG!!!!!!!! *goes to look for plot synopsis* The stupid video recorder didn't well work, nnng.

Date: 2004-11-28 11:04 am (UTC)I dunno, Snape is jsut too... oily. And adult. Adults should not have sex, because ew.
On the other hand, Remus and Sirius are the same age as Snape, that can't be my problem...
... jsut call it a subconscious issue. :p

There's this idea in theatresports and, I guess, writing in general, that the most interesting characters are those who experience a change in status or outlook. And people love to read about the change/journey- less so about what happens once they're there. I think that's what appeals to and drives a lot of slash authors and readers... the character change. Likewise, I think that Snapefic (with Hermione especially) appeals to people 'cause it ends up with the inevitable journey of him finding some sort of heart within himself. And usually fighting it. None of the other characters have half the journey to make to start a romantic relationship, unless you count straight characters entering slashdom.
It's certainly why, as you said, a pairing that seems too obvious doesn't end up being 'shipped. It's like with the X-Files... almost every single fic is about the very moment two characters (usually M/S) fall in love. Rarely do they describe what happens a year or so later...
LOL, this is a babble fest tonight. Blame the fact that I was actually reading Harry Potter today. *grin*

Date: 2004-11-28 11:43 am (UTC)um, yes, right. *reins self in, gets back to Snape*
I think you're right, about interesting characters- and Snape is interesting, and probably in terms of long-term development and depth he may have the most of any character, except maybe Harry. No, scratch that, Harry has like no character developement, he's just an annoying teenager with a broken Capslock button. So yeah, Snape's an interesting character. I think what annoys me about Snape/FOC, or often Snape/Anyone, is... well, a couple of things. For a start, in almost every case the OC, or whoever the significant other is, they usually work to change Snape, yes, but in ways that relep me. often because of their use of cliche. Phrases like "softening his heart" and "finding the kinder, inner Snape" are used. Snape should be Snape- bitchy and asexual. ;) Of course, I know that I can only use that to justify I dislike of badly written or badly plotted or badly characterised Snape!fic. I guess I just don't LIKE the inevitable Snape!journay, whereas I love all ranges or the R/S journey.
Actually, that's a very good explanation of those really WIERD 'ships that you see popping up, that are strange and wierd and yet.. addictive. Like Bellatrix/Ginny. o.O
Babble is all good, i feel like babbling too. ;) As you can tell.

I'd say she uses stereotypes quite liberally in her books, particularly in regards to fantasy staples.
But then, so does Terry Pratchett. Stereotypes allow greater scope because of the way peoples minds recognise them, but then a good author manages to twist it a little so that the cutout character becomes more human.

IT IS SO HAPPENING AND I AM SO READY FOR IT, EVEN THOUGH I WOULD NEVER EVER WANT TO SEE IT HAPPEN IN CANON BECAUSE EW BUT SAM IS A GENIUS SO IT'S COOL.
And most of these ships I completely agree with. (For a while I very actively shipped Tonks/Remus but I've grown out of it, hooray for my psyche!?)
"Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" 'ship: SNARRY. I MEAN . . . WTF!? Even the pairing name sounds bad. :(

Date: 2004-11-28 11:12 am (UTC)xD I think I'm going to hold out a little longer before deciding who Tonks's "soulmate" is. Canon can really rip apart all your hopes if you get them up in the wrong direction. :(
IT'S SO . . . EWWY. *horribly immature xD*

Date: 2004-11-28 11:20 am (UTC)Hmm, yes well... I've pretty much given up, I'll confess- let JKR decide,or whatever. Unless of course she decides remus, in which case it will become like The Event of Which We Do Not Speak in OotP. OMG

Date: 2004-11-28 05:26 pm (UTC)I've always had a particular affinity for Charlie/Tonks. Me and like, five other people in the whole fandom. I mean, there's really no evidence for it, but it seems like it would work.

Date: 2004-11-28 09:35 pm (UTC)*nods* I could really do that- Tonks I'm so ambivalent about, but- have you read After the End? A lot of the time it seems like Charlie was basically with Cho 'cause their names sounded good together and A&Z had, like, a pathological inability to leave people single, but what dynamic there was would really have worked with Tonks, now that AtE Cho is so totally blown out of the water.

Date: 2004-11-29 01:35 am (UTC)But when the author has said that those two characters personalities preclude such a ship ever happening, then yeah, I think it shouldn't happen since it is OOC. As a good Canon Nazi, I will barrack against any OOC behaviour. At least the H/Hers can (in their twisted fashion) find evidence for the possibility. D/H is so sunk, it's chatting with the Titanic.

Closest I'll ever come to S/S is SS/RL. And even that I only read when it transforms to RL/SB later on in the fic. o.O
