Sep. 28th, 2006 02:51 pmGoing skiing with la famille (sans mum) this weekend (expect snow to be crap, but that's okay because I haven't seen them for a few months now and they're not totally gruesome, so.) Am taking:
-Firefly
-BTVS S3
-House S2
- Numbers 3x01, House 3x03, the Legends pilot (I have NO idea what that's about, but it's been recommended to me, so.)
- Catch 22, by Joseph Heller; The Bone People, by Keri Hulme; Tess of the d'Urbervilles, by Thomas Hardy
-Bend it like Beckham
I figure this is enough of a selection that I'll find something the whole family can bear to watch. This is not an easy endeavor. My father likes to read about politics and the shows he used to watch, when he watched television, were The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. One brother is 17, thinks he's really clever, and hates everything except guitar and NZ On Air-funded documentaries about the Treaty (which, don't get me wrong, have a big place and all. They're just not all that entertaining.) He also thinks BTVS is the most stupid thing EVER, unlike the other brother, who is 15 and loves Buffy and Angel and also rap music and hip hop. He thinks he's gangster, which is kind of tragic. Then there's the sister, who's 13. She likes Buffy and Angel and also makeup and short skirts and diving and movies with, you know, the Olsen twins and Hillary Duff in them.
Basically, I'm going to trial them all on Firefly. It's smart and fun and it's Joss, so I can probably get the younger two to at least try it, right? Right? Plus it has guns. Boys like guns.
However. None of these mixed media delights are going to make up for the fact that I am going to be stuck in Methven without internet for the SPN premiere. Shoot me now, before I get more spoiled than I already am.
Anyway, laters, kids, see y'all Monday. Wish me luck in the eternal struggle for dominance over the CD player and the front seat in the car.

Jesus Walks, by
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Okay. This has been rec'd absolutely everywhere, by everyone and his dog. But on the very very very off chance that you haven't seen this vid? Run, don't walk. You probably do need to have seen Angel, but if you have seen it? Yeah. Amazing. I can't be coherent about it, so I'm stopping.
Spoilers through S5, of course.
Living Dead Girl, by
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
I like Meg a lot and felt that she was never fully explored in the show (like, hmm, pretty much everyone except Sam, Dean and John.) So I really enjoyed this vid because it gives her some depth. It also gives screen time to some of the other women in Supernatural (yes, there really is three minutes' worth of footage of girls! No, honestly!) And, um, yeah, I like it! By the way, I also highly recommend her other SPN vids, especially A Year On the Road. Slick, good cutting, great lighting. *thumbs up*
There may be spoilers for the last few episodes of the season. Some of them I think you'd have to be pretty sharp-eyed to pick up (a little pun there, ha-ha. Um.) BUT nevertheless!
Fun With Slapstick, by
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Fairly indescribable; hilarious.
Spoiler free!
Also! I would like to recommend a Doctor Who vid, "The Bohemians", to the tune of "La Vie Boheme" from RENT. It's by someone called Cat. But... I can't find the announcement anywhere, so I can't; but it's very funny, and if anyone happens to know where I can find it, I'd love a pointer. (Should you ever vid? For the love of pete, put your username or site details on the clip, or at least the file title. I am so not organised enough to remember where I find everything.)
Finally, not a vid rec:

Aug. 1st, 2006 01:35 pmFanon I don't get: Sam & Dean speaking Latin.
Or, rather, I do get it because
a) that would be hot
b) fandom in general is made up of geeks. Geeks think obscure knowledge is hot and/or really freaking cool.
c) Latin! Latin is cool.
d) It's not *that* unreasonable. And it would be very useful, I mean, I think it would be a smart skill.
But I was rewatching Shadow last night and Meg speaks in Latin quite a lot in that episode, including a really kind of short phrase when she phones demon papa. And the phrase she uses is [something something] pater me audi. (I went and checked Super-Canon for a transcript; the Shadow transcript just has "Meg says stuff in an ancient language" which, well, ta for that; the Scarecrow transcript says "Tire quiero patem me a di.") My best guess is "te requiro pater me audi." Of course I could be totally wrong and it's not Latin at all; if, however, I'm right, this says... well, it appears to say "I demand that you hear me, father." Mind you, "pater me audi" says exactly the same thing a hell of a lot more quickly (literally, "hear me, father.") and I have a feeling the actual phrases used is kind of ungrammatical, but it's been a while since sixth form Latin, so I'm probably wrong.
Anyway, the point is? It's been nearly three years since I last studied Latin and the phrase "pater me audi" is distinctive and fairly easy to translate. But Sam goes on to say this:
SAM: She was communicating with someone.
DEAN: With who? With the Daeva?
SAM: No, you said those things were savages. No, this was someone different. Someone who’s giving her orders.
So Sam's justification that Meg was speaking to demonpapa was Meg's later conversation in English - and nothing to do with the fact she addressed her mysterious boss-person as "father." Call me crazy, but that seems like way better evidence. I mean, he seems to be extrapolating, guessing, not having certainty - but if he could translate "pater me audi" he would have been certain.
... So now I really want a definitive translation of that Latin, and the rest of what she uses in the ep; or at least confirmation that, yup, it's Latin...
[note for my own purposes: my post in spn_possession on this subject.]

Jul. 21st, 2006 05:52 pmThing which I would bet a fairly significant sum on: we will see a prophecy of some description in S2 of SPN. It will involve the boys and be very, very vague. :P (Also? The credit order might switch. Just a thought.)
Relatedly, I work with two guys called Sam and Dean. They are nowhere near as attractive, and nor are they brothers, but Sam is the same height as Sam, which amuses me thoroughly.

I have developed a new method for watching TV shows!
1. Find a direct download community (OMG coolest thing ever.)
2. Find a torrent.
3. Clear space on the hard drive (augh. Am getting
sixth_light's feller to take me external HD shopping this weekend, yayness! And, uh, possibly also desk-shopping since we can get his car, yep yep)
4. Torrent the season backwards and direct download forwards until they meet! Brilliance! *does a happy dance*
In other news, Supernatural? A good show! I am never doubting
tanizard again (unless she talks to me about badfic again when I shall BLOCK MY EARS AND SCREAM LOUDLY oh my god.) I am watching obsessively and having fun, and, wow, I can't believe there's only one season, y'all. Points of interest:
-I would so much rather have credits and a theme tune than the extremely dull "22! Years! Ago! Two! Brothers! Mary! Is! Dead!" schtick that they have going. It's like "previously on SPN", but it's the same previously every time. Bored now.
-While I was writing this, "Disembodied Voices" came on WMP, and can I just mention that Everyone is Here, the Finn Brothers (Neil and Tim of Crowded House and Split Enz fame) album, has reasonably disturbingly SPN moments? Particularly Disembodied Voices (which, wow. lyrics.) But, yeah, if the style wasn't wildly different from absolutely anything played on the show I would totally be into a Disembodied Voices vid.
-Speaking of vids! Fic and vid recs, anyone? Anything is fine.
-Sam and Dean are kind of hot, folks.
-While it sucks that there are no female characters, this is kind of like a very slick bastard child of Buffy, Smallville, Angel and CSI. And maybe Charmed and, um, Full House. I approve of this greatly.
-But it would be better with a girl.
-Even the real estate agents think Sam and Dean are doing it. Er.
-That is all. For now. But I mean it about those recs.
Also, today/tomorrow is the Glorious 25th of May! Truth! Justice! Reasonably-Priced Love! And a Hard-Boiled Egg! Also, do you know where your towel is?
