And the ship meme, because it's back in fashion and I don't think I did it last time round anyway.
1. Comment with any ship from a fandom that you know I like, or at least have some knowledge about.
2. I will ramble for about 100 words about aforementioned ship. This may be incoherent gushing or exclamations of disgust, depending on what it is.
3. Put this on your LJ, if you are so inclined.
Fandoms: Harry Potter, obviously; Young Wizards; anything Susan Cooper; Most things Gordan Korman; er, anything else you think I've seen/read/whatever, I can probably talk about.
Go to it.

Date: 2005-03-29 09:22 pm (UTC)Okay, that's something of an exaggeration, and I guess I do believe Harry/Ginny would be pretty cool. On the other hand, I don't really believe in it the way I do Ron/Hermione for a couple of reasons: Firstly, R/Hr really has canonicity. Harry/Ginny doesn't: what it does give us, especially in OotP, is a Ginny who is together, clever and a powerful witch. She is very cool and Harry likes her: but that doesn't mean they're going to get together and live happily ever after, okay? Not everyone has to every time.
Secondly, as I said, it sometimes strikes me as very much a ship that goes hand in hand with Ron/Hermione, kind of by default. I do like H/G, but when I read it in conjunction with R/Hr (except in longer fics like AtE) it sometimes seems... too much like overkill.
I guess, overall, I can read Harry with an awful lot of people and not get offended; I'm not a very devoted Harry/anyone shipper, so I get along fine with everything. I like Ginny a lot too... but it seems very predictable and obvious to put them together and I think it can be done ham-handedly, which I guess is where any problems I have arise.
Bran/Jane: The fandom with only one girl (and problems therearising)
Okay, so the thing with TDiR is, I can read anyone/anyone, EXCEPT Simon/anyone and Will/Merriman. Oh, and Barney/Jane, that's not cool.
So I guess that leaves me with Will/Bran, Will/Jane, Will/Barney, oh, and why not, Will/Simon (I told you the problem was that this fandom only has one girl, you need to be a slasher to really have fun) Bran/Jane, Bran/Barney, Bran/Simon (I take it back, that would be quite cute, although ultimately I think Simon probably doesn't go for guys. Mostly) Merriman/Gwion, Merriman/Arthur, Merriman/The Lady and let's just stop there before we destroy my childhood too much.
Okay, so consider a fandom where I can deal with all of these and am not hugely convinced that any of them have canonical support. The two that have any are, of course, Bran/Jane and Will/Jane; I am convinced that both of these have some intentional canonical support, ie Cooper put it in there. Of these, and I guess the reasons I don't have any strong feelings towards Bran/Jane the way you do, I really find Will/Jane more compelling, partly because I secretly think Bran is gay gay gay. Er, not-so-secretly. Anyway. To get to the actual ship: Bran/Jane is a difficult pairing, which of course means it could be very interesting as well: Hot Welsh Prince meets Innocent English Lass, or something. :P I guess I think Jane could definitely go for Bran, but I'm not entirely convinced Bran would go for Jane, and so I'm less than certain what, if any, dynamics would colour this ship.
Okay, so I managed to totally avoid saying anything about that one. So sue me. ;) It's worth noting that Will/Bran/Jane would totally clear up all of the problems I have with Bran/Jane... ;)

Date: 2005-03-30 02:17 am (UTC)Dairine/Roshaun may be the first true ship of this fandom, by which I mean it's the first ambiguous or potential relationship. I guess to me that's what shipping itself is all about- potentiality as opposed to actual canonical relationship. (As a sideline this may be why I ship R/S more actively than I do R/Hr: I really truly think R/Hr is canon, but while theirloveissocanon is a wonderful precept it's not technically true. :P) So in that sense- and I'm leaving out Nita/Kit, of course- it's important.
Way less seriously, it could possibly be the funniest thing, like, EVER. Mostly because it would be so... explosive. The two most, hmm, flammatory personalities in the series- sometimes I think Dairine is the most flammatory character ever written- it would be wonderful, in this insanely violent way. (Metaphorical violence, of course.)

Date: 2005-03-30 02:46 am (UTC)Okay, Kit/Nita. Well, where do I start? Firstly, we know the attraction between them is mutual- sort of. I've heard people say that Nita likes Kit, but Kit doesn't like Nita, and vice versa. Nevertheless... in my opinion, Kit at least thinks Nita's hot, and we know Nita's thought about it at least; they basically have a whole chapter about it in HW, right? (Okay, kind of.) At any rate, I think they like each other. Actually I think they're totally made for each other. Whether I think we'll actually see this in canon? ... well... I'm not entirely sure, although I think it is more likely than any further Nita/Ronan- actually, that wee bit in the excerpt shoved me more towards Nita/Kit simply because Nita was so relaxed about seeing him. Er, in a "OMG I forgot how gorgeous he was but I CAN FULLY CONTROL MYSELF AND I'M NOT DROOLING AT ALL" way. :D
Oh I'm stopping being analytical, there's no point. I think Nita/Kit would be the cutest thing on the planet and I really hope it happens: they'd just be SO ADORABLE together. ;) When they're working together, or just hanging around, they have this fantastic, fully supportable dynamic; kind of teasing and playful, but they can also be super-serious. Of course they're best friends, and of course again that doesn't necessarily mean that they should get together, because sometimes people really are Just Friends. However, I also think that sometimes best friends can be really good romantically as well-and I think Nita and Kit would totally work like that. I can fully see them growing up and getting married and being passionately in love as well as being good friends, as opposed to letting their friendship do all the romantic heavy lifting, as it were.
I'm not sure that last bit was coherent: I guess essentially I mean sometimes people are good friends, and sometimes people are in love, and sometimes they're both, and that's good, and it would be very cute. Because they can separate the friendship and the relationship if you know what I mean.
Er. Fandom love. :D
